In this war, the famous battle of the Alamo took place, in which 187 Texans fought and held off the 6000 men strong army for 13 days. Eventually numerical superiority prevailed, and all the defenders of the Alamo were killed, but this feat of bravery in the face of overwhelming odds served as an inspiration for many an American soldier thereafter. This and the battle of Goliad, in which the Texans who surrendered were massacred, stimulated the Texan cause, and Texas thereby became an American state.
