What must you do then to learn efficiently and effectively? To excel, you must succeed in visualizing complex relationships, memorizing detailed acts, and reciting numerous metabolic reactions of the human body. The tips below are compiled from a variety of sources to help you perform at your highest level: 1) Do NOT procrastinate! Biochemistry courses build on fundamental concepts from many disciplines.
Moreover, many pathways and reactions require memorization and must be acquired over time. The last thing you want to do is cram for this course. Try to identify early any background areas in which you are deficient. This will allow time for you to review that material and not fall behind in this course. The more time you spend in contact with the material, the more likely it is that you will succeed.
I once had an instructor whose favorite saying was “Repetition is a condition of learning. ” I hated when she said it. Now, however, I understand that she was right. The more often you do something, the more likely you are to do it correctly. 3) Know biochemistry terminology and nomenclature. An enzyme or protein will often have its unction built into its name. For example, the enzyme named lactate dehydrogenate. Proteins that are dehydrogenates always oxidize a substrate. In this case, it oxidized lactate into private.
Once you get this down, you will begin to recognize names and automatically correlate them with a specific function. 4) Start with the big picture. This course requires that you memorize multi-step metabolic pathways. The best way to do this is to start with the easy steps and understand the overall flow of the reaction. First, write only the substrates, enzymes, cofactors, and products in order or the entire pathway. Do this repeatedly until it is memorized. Sometimes, this will require you to combine multiple figures from the textbook into a single pathway.
When you are able to consistently reproduce the entire pathway, it is time to add the most challenging component: regulation. Write out your pathway and draw in the regulatory components until you have mastered them. 5) Know the purpose of a reaction. Take the Boor Effect for example. An increase in [H+] (decrease in pH), CO, temperature, and 2,3-BGP all occur in active skeletal muscle. They also all encourage 02 release from hemoglobin.
