Torture Ethics Assignment

Torture Ethics Assignment Words: 807

It’s safe to say that torture may be one of the worst experiences that can happen to a human being. I know that if I were a situation where my options were being tortured to death or being put to death quickly, I would choose the quick death every time. The issue at hand is whether we should be allowed to torture terrorists for Information or not. While most people have probably already formed their own opinion on the matter, it may not be as cut and dry as they first thought once they hear the argument from both sides.

There Is countless different types of Interrogation techniques that Involve some form of torture of another(“A Torture Debate”). While many people may be against the techniques, there’s a reason they are used. They work. When you can push someone to the brink where they will do anything possible for It to stop, you can get some useful Information. There are other WAP to get Information, but often times they need to work quickly In order to stop an upcoming attack (“Securing Liberty”). The techniques used by the u. s. Overspent pale In comparison to those used on our oldie’s when captured. Our criminal justice system is based on finding punishments that fit the crime. If someone deliberately kills or tries to kill a large number of people then what punishment could be off limits to a crime like that. If terrorists know that nothing is going to happen to them if they are caught than there is not much deterrent making them think twice about the act. While my bias on the subject may have come out more than I intended in the last paragraph, I am able to see the argument from both sides.

People against the torture f terrorists will argue that torturing prisoners will put us on the same level as them, in which case we would be leaving our moral high ground(“A Torture Debate”). I believe that by fighting a war in that manner we may be on the moral high ground, but it would definitely give them high ground in battle. Many people also have the opinion that when terrorists are faced with torture they end up making up information just to get out of it for a while(“Pros and Cons”).

I admit that is true, but they weren’t going to say anything at all without the torture so at least we give ourselves the chance of finding something out about the enemy. I don’t pretend to be an expert on what exactly goes on in a place like Augmentation Bay prison. It could be that guards and interrogators inflict pain on prisons just because they like to and they think they deserve It. However, I chose to be an optimist. I chose to believe that agents of the US government are working for the people and helping innocent people In other countries as well. Does that make me naive?

Maybe, but with all the pessimism and conspiracy theories In the world today, I am okay with that. References “Securing Liberty. ” Debate. Org. N. P. , n. D.
