Media vs. Real World Assignment

Media vs. Real World Assignment Words: 762

The media influences nearly everything and everyone in America and around the world. Television shows, music, and movies cloud our minds. Therefore, we don’t know about even half of the world’s problems. While children in Africa are starving and dying from contaminated water we sit around and watch MAT. The media should use its power to bring real world problems to light. In the political cartoon simply titled “Mille Cyrus” we see the problem with media and it’s shadowing of situations that actually matter.

There are many elements in this political cartoon that support my argument. First of all, the bottom half of the cartoon shows a boy sitting at his computer desk looking at the news. The computer screen reads “Top Story: Mille Cyrus does obscene dance. ” Is this the type of content that should be a top news story? Isn’t there more important things that we as American citizens should be informed about? This country could be on the verge of World War Ill and we may not even know. For example, today there was a shooting in Washington D. C. At a naval base that killed twelve people.

Yet the first story saw on my news bulletin was about Selene Gomez and her English boy band crush. This seems unreasonable to me. I don’t believe Selene Genome’s crush is more important than twelve innocent lives lost. Next, In the top picture there Is what looks like an alarm force plane with the word “Syria” on its tail piece. Below the plane there are hands poking up desperately out of the ground. It seems as If these hands are reaching out in need of help. The plane is also dropping a gas bomb. We know it is a gas bomb because of the word “Gas” written on the bomb’s side.

The background of this picture looks dark and grey. It looks as if there are bombs exploding. The media has shadowed the issues in Syria to the point where most of us don’t have the slightest clue what’s going on. I personally don’t exactly know what’s been happening in Syria. I’ve heard that president Obama wants to drop bombs on them, but I don’t know why. This Is simply because l, along with many other Americans, are not informed. If I were to be asked about the top forty songs in America or the state of a celebrity couple’s relationship I could answer In a heartbeat.

This is what our society Is coming to. Wear a brainwashed population with no regard of the world around us. The two pictures In the political cartoon are connected by this one Issue. This issue will continue to grow. It will contaminate our minds until we know nothing except for what the media tells us. How much will people In America know about foreign issues or local tragedies in the future? In a hundred years will we be able to cite anything that Is happening outside the realm of the media? My hopes are that the answer is yes, but at this pace I don’t consider this to be possible.

Nearly everyone in the country either saw or heard about Mille Cyrus and her dancing on the Video Music Awards. As of last week she gained even more attention with her new music video for her latest released single from her new album called “Wrecking Ball. ” In the video she swings around naked on a wrecking ball and basically makes out with a hammer. Can’t deny that I enjoy the song, but this video went way than war and terrorism. In conclusion, the political cartoon titled “Mille Cyrus” is an excellent example of how the media is casting shadows over real world problems.

There are many other examples from the media that could also suit this cartoon and its purpose. Given the purpose of the cartoon, I am sure this will continue to be a problem. People will continue not to care about what is going on in the world and will keep living under their imaginary rocks. Even the boy in the picture seemed to be the type that was into the media. I can make this assumption by the fact that he was indeed on the internet. All in all, the media needs to speak up about what really matters instead of promoting people such as Mille Cyrus. Let Mille do what she wants and make America a more educated place.
