Application of Sturctural Geology to Petroleum Engineering Assignment

Application of Sturctural Geology to Petroleum Engineering Assignment Words: 883

And, we as petroleum engineers, miners will help us a lot to gain more knowledge and understand those lectures which are left unanswered in our minds. Our speaker Anger. Dan Emmanuel Montenegro from DOE, tackled more about the reservoir rather than structural geology because it is not his forte to discuss geology. According to him, a geologist must be the one to discuss it because it is their area of specialization. Anger. Montenegro discussed the overview in reservoir characterization with background in geology. II.

Knowledge / Learning Acquired As Petroleum Engineers we are more concerned with the production of hydrocarbon, which can be either crude oil or natural gas. We are involved in nearly all stages of oil and gas field evaluation, development and production. Knowing and memorizing the concepts is not enough, one should be able to apply it especially when you are working in the field. Knowing also some of the concepts in geology will help us to identify geologic structures that could help us to locate possible reservoirs.

We must be able to evaluate potential oil and gas reservoirs. Geologists focus more on the description and location of the hydrocarbon assessor rock. They find hydrocarbons by analyzing subsurface structures with estimation of the recoverable volume of this resource using a detailed understanding of the physical behavior of oil, water and gas within porous rock at very high pressure. They also spend a significant amount of time improving drilling methods and this requires clear communication with workers at all levels.

They choose equipment and supervise workers. If oil or gas is found, petroleum engineers test samples of the oil-bearing rock layers. Then they test the reservoir where the oil or as is located to see whether the oil or gas will flow by itself or whether it must be force from the ground. When only a small proportion of oil and gas in a reservoir flows out under natural forces, petroleum engineers develop and use various enhanced recovery methods, including injecting water, chemicals, gases, or steam into an oil reservoir to force out more of the oil.

The results of these tests help petroleum engineers choose the best methods and equipment for the Job They also develop technology and methods for increasing the recovery of these resources and lowering the cost of drilling and production operations. Petroleum engineers must bring the oil or gas to the surface as cheaply and safely as possible. Because oil and salt water are often found together, the engineers must also find ways of returning the salt water to the ground. If the salt water is spilled, it can damage crops and plants.

When they are involved with offshore drilling, petroleum engineers try to prevent costly spills that waste oil and pollute water and shorelines. A petroleum engineer must also consider where she stands on environmental issues. The act of drilling for oil is often seen as a threat to the environment and rounding wildlife. A petroleum engineer looks on the economic and environmentally safe production of petroleum resources. Our aim is to maximize hydrocarbon recovery at minimum cost while maintaining a strong emphasis on reducing environmental impact.

The most profitable college major in the survey, petroleum engineering focuses on finding and extracting oil or natural gas. Petroleum Engineering is a risky field, they are paid for their life is at risk especially when you are working in a field. They may be exposed to dangerous conditions, equipments and chemicals. They should be also rueful about making decisions because once you get wrong billions of dollars will be lost. Ill. Observation Engineers work with geologists to understand a site’s rock as well as to design equipment and processes to recover the resources and reduce operational costs.

The combined efforts of geologists and petroleum engineers throughout the life of a hydrocarbon accumulation determine the way in which a reservoir is developed and depleted, and usually they have the highest impact on field economics. Petroleum engineering overlaps with many of the engineering disciplines, such as: mechanical, Petroleum engineers have a future full of challenges and opportunities. They must develop and apply new technology to recover hydrocarbons from oil shale, tar sands, and offshore oil and gas fields.

They must also devise new techniques to recover oil left in the ground after application of conventional producing techniques. Since many petroleum companies conduct worldwide operations, a petroleum engineer may have the opportunity for assignments all over the world. A petroleum engineers must solve the variety of technological and economic problems encountered in these assignments. These exciting technological challenges combine to offer the petroleum engineer a most rewarding career.

We may not be known locally but we are recognized internationally. IV. Recommendations / Suggestions The speaker was able to discuss his power point presentation well. He also gave us tips, trivia and concepts that we should not forget. In formations that will be beneficial for us. I suggest that we should visit their laboratories / facilities for us to see those rock/ fragments that were presented in the power point. And to be familiar with equipments/ apparatus they’ve used because we lack of them.
