Samuel was a very inspirational and popular leader who, along with John Adams, spent a lot deal of time in the public view helping aid and gather support for resistance against the British. Adams was a very prominent figure in the sugar act of 1764. Adams had already shown that he was strong opponent of British taxation. Adams helped organize resistance in Boston to Britain’s Stamp Act of 1 765, farther showing his distrust to Britain and furthering to help the resistance. Also in 1765 he was elected to the Massachusetts Assembly where he served as clerk for a good deal of time. Adams served as a legislator of Massachusetts from 1765 to 1774.

It was as the clerk that he was the first to propose a continental congress. He was a leading advocate of republicanism and a good friend of one Tom Paine. In the year 1774, he was chosen to be a member of the provincial council during the crisis in Boston, this was the beginning of him starting to help plan the Boston Tea party. Great Britain responded to the Boston Tea party in 1 774 with the Coercive Acts. The first of these acts, the Boston Port Act, closed Boson’s rots, which devastated their economy, until the East India Company had been entirely repaid for the destroyed tea.

The Massachusetts Government Act rewrote the Massachusetts Charter, making a lot of officials royally appointed rather than elected. This is the start of what major upset the colonist, and then the crown severely restricting the activities of town meetings. The Administration of Justice Act allowed colonists charged with crimes to be transported to another colony or to Great Britain for trial; which completely undermined the American Judicial system which had just been rover to work with the trial of the soldiers from the Boston Massacre.

A new royal governor was appointed to enforce the acts: General Thomas Gage, who just happened to also commander of British military forces in North America. Adams was then appointed as a representative to the Continental Congress, where he was most noted for his outstanding oratory skills, and as a strong advocate of independence from Britain. In 1776, as a delegate to the Continental Congress, he signed the Declaration of Independence. “The Constitution shall never be construed… To prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms,” Samuel Adams.

Adams retired from the Congress in 1 781 and returned to Massachusetts to become a leading member of that state’s convention to form a constitution. In 1 789 he was appointed lieutenant governor of the state. Adams became Democratic-Republican, following his Thomas Jefferson, when the “formal” American political parties were created in the late 1 sass. In 1794 he was elected Governor, and was re-elected annually until 1797 when he retired for health reasons. That same year of 1 797 his cousin John Adams came the second President of The United States of America.
