The United States reacted to an attempt by the Japanese to siege the border of China. They started an oil embargo in an attempt to decelerate Japan’s advances into China. In relation, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 in Hawaii. There were at least three reasons why the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor these were the U. S. Embargo, Imperialism, and Oil trade. So why did Japan attack Pearl Harbor? One reason for the attack was Imperialism. For example it is evident in the passage from Document A that Japan intends on coming a world power and that they believe that taking China is necessary for it. An old order… (European and American)… Is now crumbling. Japan is the fountain source of the Yamaha race. Manchuria (Manchuria) is its reservoir and East Asia (including China) is its payday field. ” Also in the events that took place before the attack you can get a sense for the reason Japan placed the attack. “1932 Japan completes occupation of Manchuria 1 937 Japan attacks China 1 941 The United States freezes all Japanese assets and bank accounts 1 941 Japan attacks Pearl Harbor.
Because the United States froze the bank accounts of Japan it caused them to not be able to move money and stocked the flow of oil which prevented the expansion the new order. A second reason for the attack was oil trade. In the jess of Japans petroleum but in 1941 when they began to try to take over China the U. S. Reacted by cutting down the oil imported almost completely. The Japanese were interested in keeping the flow of imported oil coming because they couldn’t produce their own until they made it down and expanded Japan o the Netherlands.
Japan only had a few oil reserves so they made very little of their own oil. When the U. S. Drastically slowed down the flow of oil to Japan it caused them to attack because if they didn’t they wouldn’t have been able to further progress into China. The Third reason the U. S. Was attacked was because of the embargo. In document e Hide Togo, the Prime Minister of Japan, speaks of the demands of the united States to pull out of China. If they do as the U. S. Pleases they will lift the ban on trade which will continue to low of petroleum.
In two years they would have ran out of oil and all ships will stop moving in Japan. The prime minister feels as though that if they pull out of China that the country will have lost billions of yen and over 100,000 men with no reward, the country will fall into a third-class nation. But at the same time if they don’t they will run out of oil and they will also not have made any progress toward the new order. This caused Japan to attack because they did not see another way to come out on top without attacking Hawaii.
Although there were probably other reasons for the Japanese attack, for example, nationalism, these were the three main reasons. It is significant to understand the reasons Japan attacked pearl Harbor in 1941.
