By the dramatic description of factories, Dickens is holding the actor owners accountable for all the pollution they are causing. A factory owner would just focus on the profit and goods being produced, without recognizing his fault at the pollution he was producing. Also, during the Industrial Revolution child labor reached its limit. Children were taken advantage of they were exposed to dangerous machinery, work long hours and were paid very little money.

Kids exposed themselves to these conditions to help out their families. “Necessity compels a man that has children to let them work ” said a father questioned about his child abort. (Reader 164). The father was fully aware about the abuse his kids went through but sustain to these conditions because it wasn’t out of the ordinary to have your own kids working like his were. In 1832 a British Parliament was formed to improve working conditions for children and require them to attend school.

We begin to see the humanitarian and morality feeling that began to persuade people. Flora Tristan exposes the cruelties suffered by industrial workers she describes that being an industrial workers is worse than a slave ” I no longer hind that slavery is the greatest human misfortune: the slave is sure of his bread all his life and of care when he is sick” ( Reader 176).

Tristan says that many workers lack clothing and are in a room where all they breathe is foul air with all the particles of iron, copper, and lead that are in the room. Workers lack in nourishment and instead drink excessively for their body composure is described as weak, thin, pale complexion and dull eyes. The master restricts any form of distraction of life, for they work in silence and have no type of friendly relationship between worker and master.
