Jackson is often said to be one of the greatest presidents of the United States, but in my opinion, and I think many people would agree, there are many reasons for doubting that claim. I think that there were many reasons and situations that proved Andrew Jackson to be a bad president. One of the reasons was “The Spoils System”. He wasn’t a very fair president. He gave government Jobs to his friends and the people that voted for him. This was known as the spoils system.
The spoils system corrupted the government because no one had a chance to get good at their job or even get a job. He was almost similar to a king, which was not a good thing for the country. For example, when the Supreme Court sided with the Indians against the state of Georgia, Jackson ignored the ruling of the Supreme Court. Another reason was the withdrawal of the second national bank. Jackson tried to destroy the National Bank by withdrawal federal funds and placing them into state banks.
The bank supported the rich white men, but did not cater to the needs of the working white men. Jackson believed that “Congress had no right under the Constitution to charter a bank. ” But, It as not Jackson’s position to determine the constitutionality of the bank, because the Supreme Court had already ruled that the bank was constitutional In the case “McCullough vs.. Maryland”. In 1828, South Carolina tried to nullify a tariff on imported goods. This was known as the Tariff of Abomination. Goods that come into country cost more and goods that are made here are cheaper.
The South wanted cheap imports on cotton to use for their slaves. John C. Calhoun objects to the tariff and feels that they have a right to ignore it. Jackson was not very happy because John C. Calhoun, his vice president, purported his home state, South Carolina, in this case. Jackson threatens to hang the people of South Carolina, as well as his own vice president. He also informed them that if they ignore the law, he would close the port and send troops if necessary. Luckily, they came to a compromise in 1833 thanks to Henry Clay.
One of the many reasons as to why people don’t like Jackson so much Is because of the way he treated the Natives. Around the year 1 835, there were many different Indian tribes In the Eastern part of the United States. Andrew Jackson thought that these Indians were In he way of eastern development, so he decided to kick them out of their land that teen Ana owned Tort years Ana sent teen west. In 1 1, ten supreme court Ana ruled that the Cherokee Indians had the right to self-government and that the United States could not interfere with that.
But, Jackson ignored the Supreme Court once again and continued forcing the Indians out of the west. The result of Jackson’s presidency was known as “The Panic of 1837. ” This was caused by too much speculation because of the failure of the national bank. Speculators had bought western land from government because they thought the and would go up in value but it didn’t so they were losing money. State banks flooded the market with bank notes. This means that they were creating their own currency.
Some of the currencies they were making were more than the other currencies. Cotton prices went down and farmers couldn’t pay their mortgages. Farmers lost their farms and banks closed because people were taking their money out and the banks were running out of money forcing them to close. Many people were unemployed. Although everyone blamed Martin Van Burden for the depression, t was because of Andrew Jackson that all of this took place. One of the main causes was the National bank.
As you can see, Andrew Jackson, overall, was not a very good president. Most of the times it was because he let his temper get in the way of his presidential issues. Many people also wouldn’t have been unemployed. People also lost respect for him after killing many Native Americans and kicking them out of their own land. Maybe if he would have handled things a little bit differently than our country wouldn’t have gone into depression and people would have respected him a little bit more.
