The point of view In Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austin, Is the third person point of view because although It does tell the story as Elizabeth Bennett sees the events, the context of the book never uses the words “l, me, we, etc. ” to describe Elizabethan thoughts. For example, Austin writes, “When the ladles removed after dinner Elizabeth ran up to her sister, and seeing her well-guarded from the cold, attended her into the drawing mom,” (195).
The first part of the sentence shows that Elizabeth is not showing us her thoughts, we are Just “seeing” her actions. The second part of the sentence also confirms that fact that the story is written in third person because it still does not include possessive terms. If told from the first person point of view, the readers might gain some insight into Elizabethan thoughts, but instead Austin writes, “She colored at the idea; but recovered herself,” (473). Here in this quote, we can tell a little about what Elizabeth is thinking, since we realize that what she blushed at was omitting she reacted to differently.
However, If the book had been written In first person, Elizabethan thoughts would have been predominately displayed In the book and many other characters’ feelings would have been lost. These quotes show that the third person point of view is best for Pride and Prejudice. 2. Identify the mall character in your book. What are his/her motivations (dreams, goals, expectations)? How do his/her motivations affect plot? In the book Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austin, the main character Elizabeth Bennett wants to stay single, but changes her mind as the story continues.
For example, Austin writes in the beginning of the book, “She received him wither very best politeness, which he had returned with as much more,” (238). This shows she was not ready to marry the man who had proposed to her. It also shows that even though she was polite enough, the man took it to mean that she liked him. In addition, Elizabeth goes on to consider marrying her enemy-turned-friend by stating, “In what amiable light does this place him! ” (Austin 602). ThIs quote shows that even though Elizabeth at first disliked this man thoroughly, she grew to become friends with him.
It also shows that Elizabeth does try to think better of the man that she had no prior knowledge about. The main character Elizabeth Bennett does change in her thoughts and actions in Pride and Prejudice. 3. Compare one of the characters in your novel to one of the characters in the short story unit. Are the characters similar or different? In the book Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austin, Elizabeth Bennett shows some likenesses to the narrator in the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”. For example, Austin writes about Elizabeth, “Elizabeth, at work in the opposite corner, saw it all tit great delight,” (195).
This quote shows that Elizabeth loves her sister and wants to see her happy. The narrator in “The Scarlet Ibis” also loves his brother and tries to help him whenever Doodle needs. The two characters are also deferent as shown when James Hurst, the author of “The Scarlet Ibis”, writes, “There Is within me a knot of cruelty borne by the stream of love,” (557). This quote shows that although the narrator may love his brother, the narrator also feels hate towards his brother. This is the other to be happy.
Clearly the comparisons between Elizabeth Bennett and the orator of “The Scarlet Ibis” can be seen in two different lights. 4. Identify a theme or conflict in your novel. Create a thematic statement and support with details. The theme in Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austin, is about Judgment and how it can change perspectives. For example, Elizabeth Bennett states, “He has a very satirical eye [Mr.. Dared], and if I do not begin by being impertinent myself, I shall soon grow afraid of him,” (Austin 130). This shows that Elizabeth already has her own opinion about Mr.. Dared when she has not gotten to know him.
It also shows that Elizabeth is quick to act on what she sees because she immediately Judges him before formally meeting him. In addition, Elizabeth goes on to take a tour of Mr.. Dairy’s home, saying, “Her coming there was the most unfortunate, ill-Judged thing in the world,” (Austin 458). This quote shows that she is now sorry for the way she acted. It also shows that her Judgment of Mr.. Dared changed as the story went on and how she saw him in a different light. These quotes show the theme of Pride and Prejudice, which is the fact that Judgments can change perspectives.
