The major nutrition to the concept of global warming is the “green house effect”. There exists a category of gases in the atmosphere called the green house gases which includes but not limited to carbon oxide gas, methane, ozone, and water vapor. There is a natural green house effect that keeps the Earth’s climate warm and habitable; “man-made” greenhouse effect, which is the enhancement of Earth’s natural greenhouse effect by the addition of greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels. It is the emission of these gases that contribute to the green house effect and consequently global arming.
Industries rely major on the energy derived from the burning of the fossil fuels.. Carbon dioxide, like other green house gases, traps and absorbs the longer wavelength infra-red radiations thus increasing the temperature of the atmosphere. Scientists estimate the effect of carbon dioxide on the global warming at about 10-25%. Global warming as an environmental concern has far reached many consequences. Global warming causes climatic change in neutral areas that can lead to natural disasters .
This inhibits agriculture creating famine and starvation as the overall global DOD production falls. It has been established that the rise in temperatures over the oceans is often associated with the occurrence of violent tornadoes and hurricanes that are severely destructive. Major coastal areas are prone to destruction of property and loss of human life. The occurrence of erratic rainfall and more than often, floods has wreaked havoc whose estimates are colossal . This affects agriculture and human settlements as people are frequently displaced.
Theorists argue that the mother earth has internal tabulating mechanisms and that much of these effects can not be attributed to global warming it is important to note that the future of life on this planet depends on our sensitivity towards present environmental concerns. One of the major observable effects of global warming is the melting of glaciers. Glaciers are thick sheets of snow that covers the earth’s surface all year round. The major ice sheets of the world are found on Himalayas, Alpine, Kilimanjaro, Peru, and Arctic region among others. The major ice caps and parks estimates it will disappear by the year 2100.
Areas around the globe that are aligned at sea level will vanish under water if something is not done. Melting of glacier causes warm water to flow to the major water bodies like seas and oceans. The warmth of the incoming water and the net increase in water volume causes the seas to expand hence the rise in sea levels. The rise in sea levels is associated with effects like sub-merged coastlines, tsunamis which in turn causes loss of recreational facilities and human life. Most of the major ice caps supply all year round fresh water and hydro-electric power to he surrounding settlements and their recession will be of adverse effects.
