Intro What actually defines a violent crime? According to the Uniform Crime Report Program’s definition, violent crimes engage force or threaten force. This consists of four separate offenses: murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. These four offenses are labeled as the worst crimes. In order to control these most deviant crimes, we must determine what the source of the problems is. In many studying it has been found that environment determines peoples actions. Environment refers to many things such as geographical, physical, and even sociological.
Are these violent crime committed more frequently in certain areas or is suspicion and law enforcement just more prevalent in these areas? We will be determining violent crimes vs environment. Geographical Environment Vs Violent Crimes Geography plays a very important part in determining how environment effects violent crimes. The Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation does a study each year verifying the amount of crime in four locations of the United States the Northeast, the Midwest, the South, and the West.
Northeast In 2004, the Northeast region of the United States was estimated at 18. 6 percent of the total population; however, the only committed a total of 15. 6 percent of the total violent crimes. This shows an estimated 390 violent crimes for every 100,000 resident of the area. 90 percent of all violent crimes occur with in metropolitan cities. Looking in to all four regions of the United States, it is not completely evident that population controls the amount of violent crimes. If you compare the population of the Northeast to the Midwest, the Midwest has a much larger population but a very similar violent crime rates. However, the Southern and Western regions of the United States have a considerable number of large cities compared to the other two regions. It is also obvious that these two regions generate a huge amount of the nations total percent of violent crimes (65. 5).
They both also had a much larger rate of violent crimes. The West and South have an average of 510 violent offences per 100,000 residents while the Northeast and Midwest have an average of 390. 5 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. Since 90 percent of the nations violent crimes occur in metropolitan areas, it is very import to point of that these two regions also have more than double the amount of combined metropolitan cities. These statistics help to show that city environments have the most prevalent relationship with violent crimes occurring in the United States.
