That’s life In the story of “That’s life”, you will hear about my reading and writing experiences with word searches, books, and the SAAB. These events take place from elementary school to the present day and in the future plans. This is my life and what I did to Improve my reading and writing Issues. In the fourth and fifth grade, I really enjoyed word searches. I did them because I had a hard time spelling. I did word searches because I thought that doing them would help me spell better.

All my classmates could spell well, and I always had ruble spelling In my mind, doing the word searches would make me better with words. Never liked to read books. When I needed to read for school assignments, I Just didn’t do them. Reading for fun Just wasn’t going to happen. The summer before eighth grade, I moved to La Plat, Maryland. I met a girl named Peeing or “Nina”. Nina and I became friends on the first day of school In art class. One day I asked Nina what book she was reading and she said Twilight. She told me I should read it because it was a great book.

I thought that since she was reading it, it might be good. The next day I checked it out of the library and began to read. The next thing I knew, I started getting In trouble for reading during class and not doing my chores at home. I got into the book so much that I forgot that I hated reading. I begged my mom to take me to Borders for several weeks to get me the next book in the Series New Moon. By summer; read all four books in the series. I didn’t want to stop reading. I found other books with the same theme as Twilight, such as the House of

Night series and the vampire Academy series. When I finished those series of books, chose to explore other topics. I later realized that anyone can enjoy reading as long as they can find a topic or interest that they like. I continue to read frequently, with all my thanks to Nina who Just suggested to me to read Twilight. Since I was about nine years old, I wanted to go Into the military. I watched my older sister Join the Navy immediately after high school. She was trying to make something of herself; I just wanted to be like her.

To me, Joining the military was saying something to others, doing something with my life. Besides than my sister, my Grandfather was in the Navy as well. Recently my cousin Christopher Joined the Navy too. To Join the forces. You are required to take the SAAB, a military test given in order to qualify a person for Joining the military as well as qualifying for different Jobs. The test is broken down into deferent parts: word knowledge, sentence interpretations, math problems, math sentences, science, and auto mechanics.

I have taken the practice SAAB, and didn’t do very well in the word knowledge section. I ordered an SAAB study guide to help me get a better score. Part of the study program to improve your word knowledge is to read the newspaper front to back, every day for six weeks. While reading, you are supposed to circle all the words that you don’t know, look up until you know what they mean. They say the words that are on the test are words commonly found in newspapers because that is where our news is written. 1 OFF reading. It’s a great way to work on paragraph comprehension as well as spelling.

Before Nina got me to read, my reading level was that of a sixth grader while others in my class were at eight grade and higher. After a couple years for me actually reading, I was finally at my grade level. Just like the newspaper and my friend, the word searches were a big part of my life. When I was in elementary school, they helped me learn how to spell words I could not spell. Now I can spell those words. Even today I’m not that great of a speller but if I never would have done any of those things, I don’t think I would have made it this far or even made it to college.
