Since wireless media emerged, telecommunications became charged with the use of fiber optics, electronics, and the Internet. With the advancement of wireless media telecommunications we now have the ability to send messages to one another. A major challenge to developing a system of communications based on wireless media is the security.
Increasingly, companies and individuals are using wireless technology for important communications they want to keep private, such as mobile e-commerce transactions, email, and corporate data transmissions. As these wireless technologies grow, and store valuable information, hackers start stepping up their attacks on these new technologies. It is challenging to implement security in small-footprint devices with low processing power and small memory capacities and that use unreliable, low-bandwidth wireless networks. In what ways have smart phones that incorporate wireless technologies changed the business landscape?
Smart phones that incorporate wireless technologies have changed the business landscape in many ways. With smart phones we now have the ability to check and respond to important emails or calls when not in the office or workplace. Most businesses now require their corporate workers, managers, and supervisors to carry smart phones or mobile devices at all times. Businesses are now relying on mobile technology to communicate with employees and consumers. Many banks as well as credit card companies have simplified using their cards/branches by offering mobile applications, which also provides a means of advertising for these companies as well.
Many universities are now offering free apps for students to use. The apps allow the students to access their classes, library, course information, student accounts, as well as submit assignment through their smart phones. What are some capabilities of Microsoft Excel discussed in this week’s readings you were unaware of before? How might you use them in a professional capacity in the future? I have never been a pro at Microsoft Excel, but after reading the chapters on Excel I have learned that it isn’t as complicated as I thought. I was unaware of the different ways to edit cell contents.
I learned that I can edit a cell’s content by doing one of the following: •Click the cell, click in the Formula Bar, make the changes, and then click Enter on the left side of the Formula Bar. •Double-click the cell, make changes in the cell, and then press Enter. •Click the cell, press F2, make the changes in the cell, and the Press Enter. I was also unaware of the all the mathematics and formulas that Excel can perform. I will benefit from this information in my professional job. I will be able to create and use spreadsheets that will track customer payments, past dues invoices, and invoices with discrepancies.
I will also be able to create charts outlining the information in my spreadsheets. What are the benefits and drawbacks of location-based applications for businesses and individual users? Location-based applications provide information specific to a location. One benefit of location-based applications is location-based advertising. When marketers know the current locations and preferences of mobile users, they can send user-specific advertising messages to wireless devices about nearby shops, malls, and restaurants.
One of the biggest benefits businesses can receive from using these location-based services is word-of-mouth marketing. Most people use their smartphones to “check in” to businesses like restaurants, bars and stores they visit. These locations are broadcasted to their online friends through social networks. Many businesses get great advertising and reviews through “check in. ” The drawbacks to location-based applications are that most users do not realize that their location is being tracked each time they use these services, and it could be considered an invasion of their privacy.
