The course is designed to help you understand and acquire the habits of mind central to academic inquiry and to exercise skills In reporting documented research. Learning Outcomes: ; Ability to paraphrase, to summarize, synthesize and communicate new information both orally and in writing. ; Use traditional methods of argumentation and persuasion to effectively present your position on Issues. ; Navigate the research process to gather reliable Information. Explore multiple perspectives and communicate conclusions. ; Read critically to understand and appreciate diverse social, political, and personal viewpoints.
Class Requirements: ; Explanatory Synthesis 10% ; Two Formal Essays 20% ; 4 Rhetorical Analyses 25% ; Final Exam ; Attendance & Participation/Quizzes 25% In-Class Policies: ; Absence Policy: Students are allowed to have up to 6 “no questions asked” absences. However, on the 7th absence it is within my rights as the instructor to fail the student for the course. Athletic absences are not considered excused absences (0-2 absences Is equivalent to an A In attendance, 3-BIB, 5-C, 6-D). If you are absent from class you may not make up any work. It is your responsibility to turn all assignments in on time.
If you are more than 10 minutes late for class you will be marked as absent. Please get to class on time. It is rude and distracting to come to class late. ; Late Work Policy: Assignments and essays are due at the start of class. If you ‘OFF of the class period. If you come to class late your work may be considered late. All late work will be marked down one full grade for each day that it is late. No late work will be accepted after three days. If you are having trouble getting an assignment in, for any reason, please contact me in advance so that we can work something out. Class Decorum: Please be courteous to me and to one another.
The use of cell phones or testing is expressly forbidden. Please refrain from talking to your neighbors unless you are engaged in group work. And please note that this is not a lecture course, you are expected to show up for class prepared and ready to participate in class discussions or in group work. ; Computer Access: All students in this course MUST have access too reliable computer. ; Study Buddy: Please find another student in this course to exchange email addresses with. If you miss class check with your study buddy to receive information grading homework assignments or notes from class lectures.
It is not my responsibility to provide you with this information. ; Model and Email: You must check your MODEL and SIS email frequently. Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty is a serious issue whether intentional or unintentional! If you are caught intentionally popularizing you can be failed for the course and/or expelled from the University. If you are caught unintentionally popularizing you may be asked to resubmit your work, or you may receive a zero for the assignment. If you are even the slightest bit unsure whether you are popularizing or not please come see me or go to the SIS Writing Center. In this case it is far better to be safe than sorry!
