Social Psychology of Homophobia Assignment

Social Psychology of Homophobia Assignment Words: 693

Americans often refer to basic human rights as being freedom of speech and association, liberty, and equal treatment in court as civil rights, because they are fundamental rights that each and every citizen should not be denied on the basis of their sex, race, or religious belief.

Though it has been proven that homosexuality, the sexual desire for those of the same sex as oneself, has existed since humans have begun documenting human history, the writers of the Constitution did not include the unconstitutionality of discrimination against American citizens on the base of exual preference; therefore, making discrimination towards homosexuals perfectly legal. Homosexuals are defined as people who are sexually attracted by other persons of the same sex.

The words, “gays” or “gay people” are also common terms used instead of “homosexuals”, whereas “lesbians” are only used to describe female homosexuals. These fundamental definitions of homosexuals already indicate that this minority group is evenly distributed throughout the entire society(Nguyen, 1999). Homosexuals can be both men and women. They exist in all classes, social groups, races, positions, and countries, regardless of their age or origin. As far as historians can trace back the past, homosexuals have always been in existence, including Julius Caesar, Plato, and Alexander the Great.

In America, it is still legal to this very day, to refuse to hire, or fire someone based on their sexual preference in over 20 of the 50 states in the U. S. Although it seems as if Americans hate homosexuals, many political movements have been formed to help support equal rights for everyone. For example, the Human Rights Campaign has been working with the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered)movement to promote equal rights for everyone despite their sexuial orientation. With all the hard work this organization, as well as others has put in, same sex marriage is now legal in CA.

Famous celebrities, such as Macklemore, recently released a song titled, “Same Love”, and it speaks on the ignorance people have towards same sex marriages, and advocates for equal rights for everyone. Although advocacy attempts have been made in support of homosexuals to promote equality, very rarely do you see advocacy attempts made by people of power, or celebrities. This is probably due to the fact that they don’t wish to offend their fan base, or be looked upon poorly. Macklemore explicitly stating that he promotes same sex marriage, and equal rights for everyone on a national level was monumental.

When Macklemore saw his tours, he admits that he was fretful in attending a few of the locations, such as: Texas, Montana, and Idaho. “Those were three places where people probably sang the loudest and it gives me some hope in the power of music and what music can do,” said the MC, whose given name is Ben Haggerty. When hearing people’s testimonials about ‘Same Love’ “changing the way that they feel about gay people or the language that they use in their everyday life, making them roup of people, it’s exciting to see that music has that capability.

It Just affirms what you already believe, but to see it on a tangible level in these cities has been one of the greatest gifts of my career”(Talbott, 2012). ” Said Macklemore. Haggerty thinks the songs cultural impact shows how much the notoriously homophobic hip-hop world has changed in recent years. Socially, on a national level, prejudices against homosexuals still exist. However impactful Macklemore’s attempt was in stating his beliefs on the matter, and his huge fan base, people still have hateful beliefs towards homosexuals.

Macklemore ahs begun the revolution to making hip hop music more culturally diverse and accepting, hopefully others will follow in his footsteps. Works Cited Nguyen, M. (n. d. ).
