Ethics And Gay Marriage Assignment

Ethics And Gay Marriage Assignment Words: 326

Gay Marriage is one of those topics that used to make people uncomfortable, these days it has become less a feeling of discomfort and more of a heated standoff between those who support the change and those who do not. For me, find nothing wrong with two people of the same sex having whatever type of relationship they please. After all everyone is entitled to their pursuit of happiness. Others seem to feel threatened; whether it is their personal beliefs or religious the topic is not anything they want to hear he other side of.

I read a very insightful article outlining the ‘definition’ of marriage and what gay marriage would entail. This has helped me take a solid stance on whether I can support or be in opposition of ‘gay marriage’. In the article “Some of my Questions about Gay Marriage” by Amy Becker she quotes Andrew Sullivan, a Catholic man who also happens to be gay, he separates Out the definition Of marriage for religion and the law.

From a religious point of view, marriage is a union between a man and a woman in which they are one before god. In a lawful marriage they are legally bound together and receive certain benefits from being ‘bound’ by the law. The main differences between being married in the eyes of religion and law are that religion specifically defines the union between and man and a woman for the purposes of procreation, law does not care about that portion of the union.

Being catholic myself I can see where the definition and purpose of marriage to Catholics does not fall into line with the definition and purpose of gay arraign; however from the perspective of the law and the benefits that married couples receive I can see how gay couples would feel they are being district anted against by denying them those benefits.
