According to Robert Staples, from black- Deprivation-White Privilege: The Assault on Affirmative Action; in a oppose to Roger College from “Faculty Hiring Preferences and the Law’, perhaps differentiate with one another’s views that poses a question stating if Affirmative Action is Necessary to Achieve the United States Today? ” ultimately, strongly disagree with Robert Staples for believing that the policy of affirmative action should continue just because our nation wants to provide and promote diversity; initially in the school system but, it is not fair for example.
People are planning to attend university where they are suppose hold the grade point average of a 4. 0 or higher. They had to work very bad throughout their high school careers to get into this University but, there is only one spot open for the next semester. The other students applying for the pot is a Latino man (a minority) who hold a grade point average of a 2. 0 which is a C average. The university legally has to fill in a certain amount of minorities no matter how low their grade point averages are.
So do to this fact, if the quota is not met that students is admitted and they are denied admission. This is a prime example of how the affirmative policy works. Meanwhile, Robert Staples view affirmative action as a positive policy designed to provide equal economic opportunities for ladies and other people who was getting over look. Strongly believe that if something or embody has the higher qualification than the next person, they should have the first say. Never the last, there have been some problems in regards of affirmative action at the University of Michigan.
According to Bill Nears, CNN Washington Bureau on January 21, 2003, “Students who claim their admission to a prestigious university was blocked because of their race, will have their day in court, in a pair of cases that could have far-reaching implications for affirmative action”. The people in the court announced that they will hear arguments April 1 in double cases looking at whether affirmative action programs at the university of Michigan should continue to help students that just do not have it. Reverse discrimination” is discrimination against members of a dominant or majority group, especially when resulting from policies established to correct discrimination against members of a minority or disadvantaged group. The affirmative action policy benefits generally Africa American, Latino, American Indians, some Asians and Ladies, the disabled and military veterans. Next point, Robert Staples supports is opinion by stating that the United States still has not depleted the criminate mindset that the color of an individual’s skin still determines a person’s intelligence.
That is crazy but what he has not realized is that it is not directly based off an individual’s skin color, but it is determined by the ethnic groups to prove to society that they are beyond the expected ability. Same as he believes that if the affirmative policy later ends then this world will eventually be fully entitled to the rich powerful white males. In the perspective of Roger College, believes that universities have began to select students according to ethnicity, sex, and race. Not only in admissions, but also in financial aid, various other programs, and internships.
Roger College feels that they should include these preferences in jobs and this is correct. By that I mean if the policy is sufficient and still remains to continue today, then the policy should be able to apply to any other program that can acquire to such a beneficial policy, when it comes down to faculty hiring decisions. I strongly agree with Roger College that it is an open and ugly dirty secret that many colleges and universities still weigh such factors in faculty hiring decisions. Roger College points out an key point stating that when colleges hire, often times they grant the positions to black man or “underrepresented minorities”. Live that it is not appropriate for colleges to preferably grant the job to just a black man or “underrepresented minorities”. Because it seems as if the society is accumulating to how the world used to be back in time. I believe this because back in the day black man were not allowed to work unless is was in the cotton fields but, since the world is a better place and has set legitimate laws on the behalf of the black male, I strongly believe they should insider to be hiring more qualified than the white man.
The other point that Roger College was trying to get across made credible since in regards of the way universities does and should do things when it comes down to not only reconsidering how they give students act toward students by sex, ethnicity, and race but, also should think about the need of acquiring the same policy to the hiring process for employment preferences. Meanwhile, Robert Staples and his opponent Roger College presented their argument differently. Robert Staples begin his argument by first informing the readers of the image on owe African Americans are viewed amongst the people in the world.
Sharing that African American is not the only minority group that needs assistance through the affirmative action policy. The biggest problem he had points out is the problems Of affirmative action in the State Of California and at the University of California; where he had lived and taught for some time. He basically wants to know how the diverse state of California can abolish the affirmative action policy when majority of the population are Asians, African American, Latino, and American Indians.
On the other side, Roger College juncture his argument by stating his opinion those institutions should not only give preference to students according to ethnicity, sex and race, but it should be applied when determining for employment. Roger College than goes and organize his points by posting his ideas chronologically and then states his opinion on each topic. His topics focus around the issue of including employment to also qualify for the affirmative action policy.
For instance, he discusses about “Making hiring decisions” explaining that colleges first reference toward woman or “underrepresented minorities” and that the bias is supposedly justified by one of three rationales, but none has any legit merit. Initially, both Staples and Colleges case studies relate to one another by the simple fact that those both are able to acknowledge the issue of affirmative action. As well as they are both for affirmative action but Rodgers College wants to acquire the issue of employment in institutions to qualify for the policy.
Simultaneously, an example of a fallacious claim said by Robert Staples would be that he believes that the United States has achieved the tutus of still a “color-blind society”. I believe that Robert Staples has the same perspective of when black people were faced with racism. Although there is still some account of racism in today’s time, it is not clearly as bad and affective as it were many years. Robert Staples must realize that every white man is not trying to tear down the black race, but in fact wants them to prove their self-worth by their intelligence. Furthermore, the way both opponents supported their viewpoints are quite similar.
Both of them sustained their claims by relating them to institutions. Robert Staples related his claim to the University of California where he disagrees with the state of California for abolishing the policy of affirmative action at the institution. Whereas Rodgers College discusses that colleges in general should consider including the hiring process to benefit the affirmative action policy. Meanwhile, Robert Staples and Roger College are totally opposite in regards of their opposing careers. Robert Staples is an African-American sociologist who taught at the University of California.
Robert Staples has written a plethora of scholarly articles and kooks. To name a few, their titled, ‘The Black Family: Essays and Studies”, “Exploring Black Sexuality”, and “Introduction to Black Sociology” Unfortunately, Robert Staples has retired from his teaching career. Throughout the essay, Staples has used primary sources quite often. Throughout Colleges article, he has many primary sources. He supports his argument by pointing out the Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act as well as introducing Jonathan Bean, a professor at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and an expert on and critic of racial preferences.
