Sexism and Femenism ‘Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeed. If I fail, no one will say, “She doesn’t have what it takes. “?? They will say, “Women don’t have what it takes. “‘?? ~Clare Boothe Luce (1903 ??? 1987) Sexism is a serious issue in society, it is, and always has been, quite unfair to women. Some people might have thought that it was okay to mock women, use them, and abuse them simply because they were women and therefore thought to be useless and disposable.
Of course it is true that women are not the same as men , but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they aren’t just as good, or maybe even better, than men. True feminism only began in 1848 in the USA. Before that, it was just a few women sitting around, talking to each other and complaining about how they were not treated the way they thought that they should be. They soon realized that they needed to unite and work for their rights in society and in life.
Before World War Two, an organization called the “Betsy Ross Air Corps”, named after Betsy Ross, a WWI heroine, was created to help support the US Army Air Corps. It was never officially recognized by the US government. Feminism continued in the 1940’s and 50’s when World War Two forced women to work in jobs which were traditionally thought to be men’s because the men were busy fighting in the war. By 1945, over two million women were employed.
They worked in many positions in the war industry, making weapons, building ships, and many other things. Some people might be more on the sexist side because they think that if they support women, they would be “betraying” their own beliefs and that they would lose their own rights and superiority in the process.
