The roles of God within Christianity and Buddhism can be more so contrasted as opposed to compared. This is due to the fact that Buddhism has no all powerful Gods or Goddesses, while Christianity does have an all powerful God. In Christianity, it is believed that there is one supernatural, divine being that guides us, and whom you are obligated to worship. To a Christian, “The purpose of our worship is to glorify, honor, praise, exalt, and please God.
Our worship must show our adoration and loyalty to God for His grace in providing us with the way to escape the bondage of sin, so we can have the salvation He so much wants to give us. ” (Null 1:1). That proves how important a God is in Christianity. Christians believe that God is the creator of the world and gave us everything we have, and that is why we must show God so much adoration. In Buddhism however, due to the lack of an all powerful God figure, there is no strict, routine worship. The meditation that they do is entirely for them.
Through meditation (a way of becoming enlightened) they can break free from the cycle of reincarnating repetitively into this world, and can finally enter what they call Nirvana. Nirvana is a Buddhists idea of a peaceful, serene afterlife. The similarities in the commandments are another way that Christianity and Buddhism can be compared and contrasted. In Christianity, Christians are obligated to follow a set of guidelines given to them by God. These guidelines are known as the Ten Commandments that were sent from God.
As part of the Christian faith, it is believed that everything they do is a reflection of what they are doing to God, and that is why Christians need to follow the guidelines given to them by God. Christians believe that Christ was a gift from God, sent to clear them of their sin so that they can e better, more caring, selfless beings, and one day resurrect and live forever with Christ. By following the Ten Commandments, a Christian gets closer to this goal of living forever with God.
In Buddhism, Buddhists live their life according to the Eightfold Path. The Eightfold Path is a proposal made by Buddha to help people deal with [life’s] expectations and desires. (Despite et al. ). Many of these guidelines are similar between both of these religions. For example, Christianity says “do not accuse anyone falsely’ (Exodus 20:16), and Buddhism recommends that you use the right beech (meaning not to lie or gossip); both rules have the same meaning.
The difference between these sets of guidelines is that Christians had these commandments given to them by God, and therefore need to be followed, while Buddhism Eightfold Path were proposed by Buddha and are suggested to be followed. Although the basic message in the commandments and the Eightfold Path are similar in meaning (ii. Be kind, selfless, respect one another) they also differ. One final way that Christianity and Buddhism can be compared and contrasted is through the way that the teachings of each religion are intended to be interpreted. In Christianity, the teachings being made are direct, telling you exactly what you need to believe. For example, Christians believe that God created the world, instead of the world creating itself naturally through the Big Bang Theory. It is intended for you to increase and maintain your faith in God. With that faith in God, you believe that God has a plan for your life that s waiting to unfold, Just like the teachings say.
Buddhism on the other hand lacks the fugue of an all powerful God, and therefore the teachings of Buddhism are intended for oneself; there is no fateful plan they believe is laid out for them, waiting to unfold. Buddhists believe that they make their own reality through the teachings of the concept of Karma. In Buddhism karma mainly refers to one’s intention or motivation while doing an action. (Karma, 2:1) This being said, if you have good intention while doing something for other people, good things will happen to you in return, and you Hereford make your own reality, either positive or negative.
The moral teachings of Christianity and Buddhism are comparable in some way and rather different in other ways. The moral teachings of Christianity are intended to strengthen your faith in an all powerful God that has a specific, rewarding plan for you, while Buddhism is a religion intended for oneself, where you make your own reality through your actions. Both religions share the commonality of moral teachings, and both lead to the culminating “happy ever after” but they are attained under different regulations.
