An increasing number of studies have highlighted the importance of the contextual knowledge that a student must possess to be ready for college. These studies describe the need for students to understand how to apply to college, how to manage financial aid issues, and, perhaps most importantly, how to adjust to college once they arrive.

The transition to college has a component of culture shock for dents, one that is more severe for students from some communities than others. Information about the culture of college helps students understand how to interact with professors and peers in college and how to navigate college as a social system and learning environment. Recently, majority of graduating students have already done taking entrance examination to their choice of school or universities. In this study we would like to determine if the graduating students are academically skilled, physically, psychologically, spiritually and financially ready for college education.

Statement of the Problem The purpose of this study is to assess the readiness of 4th year MSP students of Fax Catholic Academy Diocese of Backlog S. Y. 2010-2011 for their college education. Specifically, it will answer the following research questions: 1. What are things that the high school graduating student need to prepare themselves for college? 2. What are the things to be considered before proceeding to college life? 3. How should a high school graduating student prepare themselves for college life? Significance of the Study This section explains the importance of the study to the following: To the Fax Catholic Academy:

This study will serve as basis for facilitating the readiness of the 4th yr students for their College education. To the Faculty: This study can be used in assessing the student’s readiness for their college education, as well as how and where should the teachers give emphasis to the graduating students that they maybe prepared for College life. To the Parents and the Family Members: That through this study, they may be able to understand and help their children prepare physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually for college through their never ending love, support and prayers.

To the 4th yr Students: This study can help them realize their own strengths and weakness in preparing for college. It will also provide them the baseline knowledge of the necessary requirements for College life. TO the Future Researchers: This study can serve as reference for their own researches in relation to the readiness of 4th yr students for college. Scope and Delimitation This study will assess the readiness of 4th year MSP students of school year 2010 – 2011 for college education. It will determine if the graduating students consider themselves ready for college.

The subjects are o be assessed through their academic skills(reading educational / professional books, vocabulary building, taking down notes during lectures/ review sessions, studying during free time); psychological (Getting support from family members, having encouragement from friends / classmates, having a positive outlook towards college); physical (eating healthy diet, taking vitamins, having adequate rest and having a conducive, quiet home environment); spiritual (attending church services, praying, reading the bible or devotional books); financial (saving allowance, raising funds among friends).

Lastly, the study also determined in what aspect (mental, psychological, physical, spiritual, and financial) the graduating students consider themselves least ready. The subjects of this study are the graduating Thayer students of fax Catholic Academy Diocese of Backlog. METHODOLOGY Research Design This study follows the Descriptive Method of research design. In this study, phenomena are described and the relationship between variables is examined. Its purpose is to observe, describe and document aspects of a situation as it naturally occurs and to serve as a starting point for hypothesis generation or theory development. This type of research finds answers to the “who”, ‘What’, “when”, “where” and “how” of the study. Data Collection Method In our study, we used a survey questionnaire. It is a form Of data collection method that came directly from a primary source which gives the researcher firsthand information.

The researchers distributed the survey questionnaires to the chosen respondents for them to answer accordingly. After the actual data was collected, it was evaluated to obtain the desired results. Participants of the Study, Sample and Sampling Design The participants of the study are the graduating 4th year MSP students f Fax Catholic Academy Diocese of Backlog, SYS 2010 – 2011 with 28 number of students excluding the other section.

Research Instrument The instrument used for this study is a questionnaire. It is a form of data researcher firsthand information. The questionnaire is composed of parts. The part one of the questionnaire contains the pertinent data about the personal profile of the respondents such as name (optional), year and section, age and sex. The part two of the questionnaire contains the 5 questions related to readiness of the students for college education which is answerable depends on the given choices.

Hypothesis The student must be sufficiently fed, free from too much worry, comfortable, and well aware of the importance of what is to be learned. In the case of our study, the graduating student’s physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, psychological and financial needs must be fulfilled and met first before they can be fully prepared for college education. If students have a strong purpose, a clear objective and the right attitude, learning is effective and more efficient in the process of taking college after graduation.

But if outside responsibilities or worries weigh heavily on their minds or if there are robbers in the other aspects aside from intelligence and mental capabilities, they may still have little interest in striving to learn for their choice of course in college. Therefore one must learn to recognize or assess their own strengths and weaknesses in order for one to know what aspect they should start to improve so that their minds will be set on their goal and that is to take college education.

A little anxiety can be good because it can increase our awareness of reality; a lot of anxiety has the opposite effect and keeps us from reaching our goals. Meanwhile, “Education means both acquisition of experience as well as development of skills habits and attitude which help a person to lead a full and worthwhile life in this universe. ” Education must produce socially good and efficient students to serve our country. In order to achieve a successful life one must go to college.

A college may be a degree-awarding tertiary educational institution, an institution within a federal university, an institution offering vocational education, or a secondary school. The college may require factors to obtain successful and progressive college education. It involves academic skills, psychological, physical, spiritual and financial readiness. If one is academically ready, he/she is already reading educational or professional books, reading to build vocabulary, taking down notes during lectures or review sessions and studying during free time.

If one is psychologically ready, he/she is already getting support from family members, having encouragement from friends or classmates, and having a positive outlook towards college. If one is physically ready he/she is already eating a healthy diet, taking vitamins and supplements, having adequate exercise and rest and having a conductive, quiet home environment. If one is spiritually ready, he/she is attending hurrah services, praying, and reading bible or devotional books. And finally, If one is financially ready, he/she is already saving allowance, and raising fun among friends.

If the graduating students could achieve those factors so they are ready for college education. They are ready to face a new chapter of their lives and fulfill their dreams in life. Academic skills are necessary for being successful in school, and in many cases, in a professional career.

Its immediate goal is to understand behavior and mental processes by researching and establishing both general principles and specific cases. Spiritual – can refer to an ultimate or immaterial reality; an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of their being; or the “deepest values and meanings by which people live. ” Spiritual practices, including meditation, prayer and contemplation, are intended to develop an individual’s inner life; such practices often lead to an experience of connectedness with a larger reality, yielding a more comprehensive self; with other individuals or the human community; with nature or the cosmos; or with the divine realm.

So, a society where majority of people have higher education, runs very efficiently and smoothly. Ill. Kinds of College Education When we talk about college education in the Philippines, we can classify the said into two categories, namely formal Bachelor’ Degree and non-formal or Vocational.

A. Formal College Education Formal college education refers to courses which are offered with longer period of studying. These courses are heavily theoretical in contents and instructions. The professors of these studies impart largely theories and schools of thoughts that are necessarily included in their respective curriculum to ensure that the learning students receive from said tertiary educational institution is sufficient and substantial for them to practice such field of profession they have chosen to enroll. B.

Non-Formal College Education On the other hand, non-degree offers mostly require shorter period of studying since these usually directly teach practical and actual trainings for vocational and technical courses. Actual trainings and on the job applications of theories are often conducted under these types of courses. Thus, these schools are equipped with real tools and machineries for their students to practice and explore and in turn, prepare them for the actual work in relation to their study. IV. Factors for College Education Readiness There are factors to determine college readiness.

These factors will enhance a person as a whole and it determines the readiness for college education. It includes academic skills, psychological, physical, spiritual and financial. A. Academic Skills Reading, taking down notes, and studying that improves your mental ability are examples of academic skills. Academic skills are the skills necessary to do well in an educational setting. They include reading, writing, math, research, computer, and study skills. Academic skills are necessary for being successful in school, and in many cases, in a professional career.

B. Psychological Getting support from a family member is important, such that we also need encouragement of our classmates and have a positive outlook towards our goal. We need these to be successful in our fields of learning in college education. Psychological, by means of psychology is the science of mind and behavior.
