In mostly every title, there is a specific meaning to it that may take some thought or It could be pretty obvious. In Jane Student’s book, Pride and Prejudice, Austin uses elements like tone and characterization to show the full significance of this title. In the beginning of the book, it is hard to understand the meaning of this title. But as the book progresses, the reader gradually understands how these elements describe the title, Pride and Prejudice, through Student’s tone and description of characters.
The tone that Austin uses Is In this book Is mostly satirical. An example of this Is Lydia, she lacks responsibility and common sense. This Is proven when Lydia takes pride” In her marriage with Hickman, as she Is the first of her sisters to be married. When Lydia returns back home with Hickman, she brags to her sisters and Is very proud of her marriage. All Jane, I take your place now, and you must go lower, because I am a married women” (Austin, 212). Here, Lydia tone Is satirical when she talks to Jane since she is now above them because she is married and her sisters are tot.
It also shows her sense of pride in that she is better than all of her sisters. There is more satire in this book, but another example of this is between Mr.. Collins and Elizabeth. Mr.. Collins proposes to Elizabeth, but she can’t take him seriously. “The idea of Mr.. Collins, with all his solemn composure, being run away with by feelings, made Elizabeth so near laughing that she could not use the short pause he allowed in any attempt to stop him further, and he continued” (Austin, 73). Here, Mr.. Collins thinks that he has more pride than he actually does, and that he should not memorable himself to people that are lower than him.
The title can also be displayed through two characters, Elizabeth and Dared, who are the books main characters. Dared, is a very wealthy, proud man who comes from royal family. “She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me; and am in no humor at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men. You had better return to your partner and enjoy her smiles, for you are Hasting your time with me” (Austin, 7). This shows how much pride Dared has and how he is prejudice because he doesn’t know anything about Elizabeth and hasn’t even met her yet.
The same goes for Elizabeth, she is prejudice towards Dared because of what he says about her. Just like Dared, she is too quick to Judge him and gets the wrong impression of Dared, Just like how Dared gets the wrong Impression of Elizabeth. But as the reader goes farther Into the book, Dared his prejudice towards Elizabeth starts to fade away. “He began to wish to know more of her, and as a step towards conversing with her himself, attended to her conversations with others” (Austin, 15). Darers prejudice towards Elizabeth Is fading away. But,
Elizabethan wounded pride Is what keeps her dealings and being prejudice towards Dared for most of the book. This book Is called Pride and Prejudice because of the way characters Like Elizabeth and Dared act throughout the entire book. They both have pride wealth themselves and prejudice towards each other. But as the book continues, their be demonstrated through tone by using satire, which shows the pride of the characters like Mr.. Collins and Lydia. First impressions, egos, and social status are a huge part of the plot of this book and fit right into the title Pride and Prejudice.
