Reprinted with permission. Lab Questions: 9. 1 Judging from the seismogram in Figure 9. 4 of the lab book, which wave appears to be the most damaging? Based on the density of the seismogram, I believe the surface wave appears to cause more damage. Based on my studies In a typically earthquake situation the surface wave is the most destructive of all energy transmission. 9. 3 Determine the distance to an earthquake at a station that receives P and S waves 5. 0 minutes apart. Hint: (a) Place tick marks on a scrap of paper equal to 5. 0 on the minute’s axis. B) Flt that to the horizontal separation between P and S curves. (c) Read distance directly across on the distance axis. Based on the diagram, the distance traveled over a total of five minutes is 1,600 kilometers. 9. 5 At this point, from the information in Figure 9. 68, how specific can you now be as concerns the location of that earthquake? The earthquake Is located where Seattle and Berkeley Staunton constructed circles Intersect. 9. 6 At this point, from the information in Figure 9. C, how specific can you now be as concerns the location of that earthquake?

Based on the seismologist Information, the earthquake Is located at the Montana Wyoming border where the three circles intersect. 9. 10 using the monogram, determine the Richter magnitude for the three earthquakes listed (see, p. 169 in the lab book). S arrival minus p arrival Amplitude Magnitude (A) 8 seconds 20 millimeters 4. 25 (B) 8 seconds 0. 2 millimeters 2. 25 (C) 6 seconds 10 millimeters 1 OFF 9. 14 The 2002 Afghanistan earthquake measured 5. 9 on the Richter scale and killed 1,800 people. The 2001 western Washington earthquake measured 6. 8 on the Richter scale and killed only one person.

Can you imagine why the huge difference in the numbers of deaths? Hint: It has to do with construction materials. Earthquakes don’t kill people, buildings kill people,” this is because Afghanistan does not have the building codes and standard such as Washington has in place. 9. 17 Where is the location of that June 19 quake (to the nearest tenth of a degree latitude and longitude)? Follow the steps 1 through 4 to complete the table below (see lab book up. 164-165). The earthquake in which occurred June 19, latitude and longitude coordinates are 36. 3 N, 89. 7 W.

P arrival time S arrival time Difference in P & S Distance hours: minutes: seconds tenths of seconds seconds kilometers ALT 3:46:46 4 sec 30 km GOAL 3:47:17 16 sec 130 km pop 3:47:21 18 sec 150 km 9. 20 One of the curious things about the loss of life in regions surrounding the Bay of in Bangladesh. How could this be? It certainly couldn’t be the difference in distance. Hint: To answer this question, you should first contour the map in Figure 9. 20 (see p. 170 in the Lab book) and then follow the rule. ‘ Note: You do not need to submit the contour map with this report.

The difference in loss of lives is simple, when the Burmese plate shifts over the Indian plate causing a tsunami, because Bangladesh is o close to the edge of the plate is why there were fewer lost lives compared to Sir Lankan, the bay is also much deeper along the coast near Sir Lankan. Lab Summary: Address the following in a 200-300 word summary: Summarize the general principles and purpose of the lab. Explain how this lab helped you better understand the topics and concepts addressed this week. Describe what you found challenging about this lab. Describe what you found interesting about this lab.

Write your summary here: I feel that this worksheet was put into place to show how to read and gauge isotonic plate shifts, after completing this assignment I feel that if I was giving some basic information involving reading a seismograph I could perform this task with confident. I cannot say that I have ever really studied such information such as what I was in this class this week, I feel that having background information on any subject is a necessity this is where such assignments come into play, these assignment are loading with topic information.

Honestly I found this entire assignment to be challenged, every question seem to be difficult, but after reviewing and reading information I started to come together, after reading the information I would attempt the assignment, then I would run into a problem and have to return to my reading to once again review, I preformed this on nearly every question, but by the end of this assignment I feel that this is something I will carry with me and could possible apply to information acquired down the line of my education.

I found this lab to be interesting because I feel like I learned something, I felt applied while completing it, I did not know there were different wave to an earthquake either, altogether I enjoyed the assignment and look forward to the next one.
