Video’s description: Mr Marr – Higher History – The Assignment
Let ‘s discuss a summary of what the assignment task is all about. Firstly you have to choose a historical topic to research. Once you’ve done this you will carry out research both in class and in euro and tank ultimately you have to rate a final essay under exam conditions based on this research, and you will be given 90 minutes to do so. The assignment is worth 30 marks which means it’s what one-third of your overall hire history mark of 90.
Let ‘s discuss how you’ll be marked
The marking for a higher assignment is similar to the marks for a higher examine see although there are some key differences.
You will be given three marks for an introduction unlike two for a normal high of AC.
You will get seven marks for analyzing your factors unlike the normal six that you get for an AC.
You’ll get five marks for evaluating your factors unlike the four marks relative to an oval and an exam I see. This is you can get four marks for giving historical pinion which is not required in a higher essay but is a key part of the higher assignment.
You’ll get eight marks for using your knowledge unlike a six that you normally get any higher essay, and finally, you get three marks for a conclusion unlike to that you get any higher essay. However, although the marks are slightly different, the scales remain the same as those which you will use when you rate a higher examine C.
Let’s discuss how you go about choosing a topic
There’s a variety of different ways you may go about this. You can research any issue that you wish but help something you’re interested in. But ultimately you may want to build on work that you’ve already done as part of hire and choose something you’ve studied this year. Your topic has to be a question where there are different possible answers. The whole point of your AC or your assignment rather is to debate different possible answers before you reach your final conclusion. A question on whatever we you wish but rather like you would do for a while examine see you may wish to use interest such as how thoroughly or how important.
Let ‘s discuss how you go about planning your project
It’s important that you don’t just start randomly reading materials. This will be to some extent a waste of your time and isn’t going to allow you to focus on the key facts that you need. You should plan your research before you start. Once you’ve chosen your overall topic, you then have to think about at least four specific factors that you could research as part of this although you may wish to go for five to try and ensure you get the five evaluation marks.
Let’s look at this example
If you are creating the extent to which Britain was a democracy by in 1818, you may identify these six possible factors. However you don’t need all of them so instead once you’ve chosen the possible factors, you will then actually select the ones you’re going to research. By doing this will make it much easier for you to ordinary focus on the facts that you need to help you write your assignment. One possible option is to work either in a group or on your own and share ideas about the possible topics. However, it’s worth noting that whilst you can do this the final project and the final research must be your own.
Let’s discuss how you go about cutting out your research
There are different ways to do this, but these are one possible option.
- Firstly break down your research into the four factors or five that you have identified.
- Make a note of each source as you go through; for instance, take and know of the name of the author and the title of the book.
- You may also wish to include the year it was published. If it’s not a book, you’re using, for instance, a website or a DVD and you should take notes of this.
Please note that when you give information from a source for the final assignment in terms of the historical opinion, you must identify the specific place that it was found for instance if you found it on a website but it’s originally from a book it’s the book you must name. You should then write down relevant notes.
Basic bullet point notes or try and summarize the facts using your own words. There’s a variety of different sources where you might find information, books, magazine, articles documentaries and so on and these are just some of the options that you can choose. You can include either primary or secondary sources in the final assignment. One possible option is to use Google Scholar. this is a good source that gives access to a variety of different academic articles, journals, and books that cover a range of different topics.
Let’s discuss know the resource sheet
When you come to rate the final assignment, you can be given some help to do this. You’re allowed to take an earful resource sheet into the final rate up to help you. There is a limit of 250 words to be included on this sheet, and it must only be on one side of the word sheet.
The purpose of the resource sheet is to help you plan your essay, and it’s also to give the market an idea of what you plan to do when you began writing. You must submit this sheet with your final assignment and failure to do so can cut roommate potentially cost you ten marks. This is an example of what the year for resource sheet will look like. And in the next slide, we’ll discuss what you can include on this .make sure your final resource sheet is checked by your teacher beforehand to ensure that you’ve complied with all rules. In terms of what you can include to some extent is up to yourself you may want to rate things in a plan, you may include some key statistics or facts, you will certainly want to include historians, opinions and where you found these because this is a key part of your final mark; and you can use things such as subheadings Mane’s maps and color to structure your resource sheet. What you have to avoid doing is ringing a simple list of facts without any obvious plan of what you’ll rate, and you obviously can’t rate your entire assignment to be
copied up during the rate of because clearly, this would take you significantly over the 250 web limit.
Let’s now discuss how we go about rating the assignment
In simple terms, this is a good idea of what your famous Assignment should look like in summary. You should start off with an introduction, which includes context in the background. It should identify your lane of argument linked to your question. In other words what your final conclusion will be. And it should identify the factors that you’re going to discuss. your main section you want to discuss at least four but potentially five factors; and for each, you want to state the fact you’ll discuss, give information about this you wanted to be an analyze each factor, and then reach an overall decision about that factor, in other words, evaluate.
Finally you need a conclusion. Like the introduction is for the key sections you need to give a summary of all the main factors you need to give a clear answer to the specific question that you’ve chosen, and you should try and give two reasons to support this conclusion. One way to go about writing the main sections is to use the FIDO structure. You should be discussing at least four factors, and you may want to present each of them in this manner.
To ensure you get as many marks as you can. Start off by discussing the factor that you will discuss. After you’ve done this you then give information perhaps to earthly relevant facts about the particular facts are being discussed. You then come to the deified er which is it to be you can explain why this issue is relevant or perhaps why it’s not. And at this point, you may wish to include some historians perspective as well.
Finally, the author photo stands for overall, and this is when you reach essentially many conclusion. You make a decision about your individual factor. For instance was it the most important or the least important. But in each case, you should give new evidence to support less and ideally link your evaluation to your ultimate line of argument that is what your final conclusion will be.
Let ‘s look in more detail at how to write the context and introduction
It’s important that your context and introduction includes three key features. Firstly you should give at least two background facts about the period of history you’re studying to help introduce your topic.
You should give an indication of your line of argument where your final conclusion will be and make sure you link this to your specific question. For instance, if you have an isolated factor than the question but that will not be your final conclusion, your final answer you should still refer to this.
Finally, you should describe rather than list the factors that you’re going to discuss in your essay, and you should aim to do four or five of these. If you achieve all this, you’ll gain the 30 marks for your introduction.
Let’s discuss now how you go about using sources
You’ll get one mark for each relevant piece of reference the information you provide. For instance, James Warren argues in his book questioning slavery that and you would outline the specific opinion held by weaving. It’s important that you identify the historian, the source of this court and the actual court or the view of the historian. Make sure you don’t use sources in either the introduction or conclusion. They should be found in the main body of your text. Please note as well source March will only be given for historical opinion what the historian believes, it’s not enough to give basic points of knowledge.
The simplest way to do this give the specific core. Don’t simply paraphrase that view. This will ensure that the marker agrees that you’ve done enough to dissolve the marks and thus four of these available.
Let’s look at an example to give you an idea of what you have to do.
For instance, if we were discussing the question of the main reason that women gained the right to vote but if the software Jets is an isolated factor what’s written down here is a good example of what you shouldn’t do. If you said in Herbert votes or women poor Bartley gives us the proper name for the suffragettes, this is a historically accurate statement but it’s not relevant, and it’s not opinion. Instead, a much better point would be to give poor Bartley’s opinion. In this case about the role of World War one played in helping women get the vote.
Let’s discuss how you get marks for you to acknowledge
In simple terms, you’ll get potentially eight marks for giving a relevant piece of information.
Your fact must be relevant, and there must be some detail too. For example, don’t simply say that conscription was introduced in World War one how much better point would be pointing out the year that was introduced and who was actually affected by this. another good example will be if you say the Liberals introduced pensions this is too basic but by hey Lane when they did and who was eligible this is much more likely to gain a mark.
Again let’s look at an example this one drawn from the Nazi Germany topic. The statement written here is an entirely historically correct statement, but it’s not directly relevant to, explaining the reasons for the Nazis achieving power. Instead of this fact as it’s now written gives a much better understanding and as such is more likely to gain you a map.
Let’s discuss how you get analysis marks
The analysis is really a debate. It’s when you show the different prospects of that there are based on the factors and information you’ve provided. For example, you might explain why your factor is important and answering a question explaining why this is. You may also see however and give an alternate view suggesting why the fact was not important. You might link two factors together and explain why they have a similar impact. But in all cases remember- it’s important that you give evidence to justify this analysis. We can see here an example which discusses the impact of a factor, in this case, industrialization and the impact it had on democracy, and we can see here one way we discuss our limitation of a factor again on the same topic.
Let’s discuss how we get evaluation marks
Evaluation mark is like a mini conclusion. It’s when you make a decision about how important your factor is in terms of your overall question. For example, you might say it’s the most important factor because you may say only had a limited impact because you might say that one fact that is more important than another.
