Racism Is a factor In all walks of life the health care field is not immune to this. Some aspects to the health care title, policies, practices, regulations are innocent, but can be interpreted as institutional racists A patient who feels discriminated against can quickly escalate toad regulatory issue. What Is a Regulatory Issue? One morning on your way to work you decide to treat yourself toad cup of coffee. The barista carefully creates your latte as you nibble on a bit of a blueberry muffin.
Once your cup of coffee Is ready you find a booth to sit down. Anxious to enjoy your breakfast beverage you raise the cup tryout lips and take a big gulp, It should have occurred to you that the coffee would be burning hot, but you did not think of that until you seared your lips and mouth when you attempted to swallow. This seems Like a mistake that should be blamed on the patron for not using common sense skills, but the word “hot” is missing from the coffee cup. The customer now has grounds to sue the coffee house, creating a regulatory Issue. Regulatory Issue: Racism
The real fight to end racism began with the civil rights movement during the sass’s. Since then strides against segregation and empowering equal rights accomplishments are obvious, but the health care field soul seems to be playing catch up. Regulatory issues do not only involve the patient and physician relationship, especially when racism Is a factor. Employees of the health care system are also subject to feeling discriminated against in the workplace. It the employee tells so inclined, it may be appropriate for the employer to be served with a lawsuit.
Article: Racism Reported by Direct Care Workers in Long-Term Care Settings This article published in June 201 1 covers interviews with 644 direct care workers, who held employment In three types of long term care settings. Out of the three types, the study selected Forty nine long term center agencies in a five county area of Ohio. The findings revealed racist comments made by care facility residents, the family members of residents, and staff members to one another. It was common for the team members to Ignore comments made by the elderly patients because of their GE, lack of education or demented state.
These health care workers prefer to take the higher road, but speaking to a lawyer and taking their employer to court due to working in a racist environment would be appropriate in this situation. Jeez, F. K. , Renters, J. H. , Onlooker, L. S. , & Castors-bindle, M. (2011). Article: Still Closing the Gap Printed In the summer of 2009, Bullfight Mullions remembers the call rights movement of the sass’s. He was a young medical student in the Chicago area at the time of Dry. Martin Luther King marches. He remembers seeing poor black Americans
In need to health care but unable to afford the costs prior to the signing to the Medicare/Medicaid act As his career extended he began to see patients both legal and illegal from Africa, Mongolia, the Central Americas, and other countries seeking his medical assistance. Manual, F. (2009) states “They construct buildings, stats restaurants, and clean offices and homes but have no legal standing. And certainly no health coverage. The economy welcomes them, but the health system does not. ” Hospitals ay not any tense won are not Insured or too poor to Nora ten meal bills a hospital stay will require.
If they did it would help pay the hospitals bills for running a 24 hour operation, but that would be unethical. Manual, F. (2009) Conclusion The two articles I reviewed for this essay came from different perspectives. One from a health care workers stand point, who heard hurtful comments regarding their race by fellow co-workers and the very people they were treating. The next article I reviewed a physician who cared for all different races of patients, even when they were unable to obtain health insurance. Racism is still alive in today’s society despite the work to diminish it over the past fifty years.
Medical staff must remain cautious when dealing in situations racism could be assumed. Racism is such a touchy subject; it is easy for a person to assume discrimination then file a law against their physician or other health care professional.
