She returned back home the next morning to find her mother dead due to suicide because she felt that Miriam had abandoned her. Miriam was forced to live with her father who arranged a marriage for her with a man whose name is Rehashed. Rehashed is extremely abusive to Miriam. Leila is a young girl who is best friends with a boy named Atari. Eventually the innocent Friendship turned romantic. War begins in Afghanistan which causes the people to move. Atari And his family decided to leave the city which causes the two to physically express their love for each other.
As Leila and her family are preparing to move their home is bombed which kills her parents and severely injures her. Tarsi’s family takes her in and takes care of her. They also break the news that Atari was killed which leads to her meeting Rehashed. Rehashed was in search of a second wife. Leila has 2 kids for Rehashed. Rehashed becomes more abusive to both the women and eventually tries to kill Leila but Miriam kills him first. Atari appears at Laic’s doorsteps in which they rekindle their love and remove all the attention from them Miriam admits to killing Rehashed in which she is executed.
Leila moves on with her life with Atari in which she gets regnant for Atari and plans on naming the baby Miriam. 2. The reality of the place affects the lives of the people by causing them to leave their homes To find a safe place to live. For women it causes problems because women are no longer able to walk outside with a male relative. If caught you will be punished or beaten. 3. Miriam is the illegitimate daughter of Jail who marries Rehashed, a shoemaker. Miriam had seven successive pregnancies but failed to carry any of them full term.
Rehashed eventually got more abusive towards Miriam. Jail s a wealthy business man who has 3 wives and 9 children who sends his daughter and her mother to live in a hut. Although Miriam is a bad look for him the amount of love he has for her causes him to not totally dismiss her. As Miriam got older she asked her father to recognize her in which he made a decision to marry her off. He eventually regrets this decision and dies. Leila is a young girl who falls in love with a childhood friend whose name is Atari. She was educated and beautiful.
Leila and Atari became intimate which caused Leila to become pregnant but Atari and his family moved from the itty promising her he will one day find her again. Leila meets Rehashed and convinces him that her daughter is his. Atari at a young age lost his leg but was very tough. Atari and his family ended up in a refugee camp in which his father passed away. He was eager to get his mother out and takes a job to deliver a coat covered in hashish. He is caught by the police and is sentenced to 7 years. When he was released he found out his mother passed away so he returned to Kabul where he found Leila.
Leila allowed Atari into her home in which Rehashed found out. Rehashed rows very upset and begins to beat Leila severely nearly killing her by chocking her. Miriam takes action and hits Rehashed with a shovel killing him. Eventually Miriam admits her crime and is prosecuted. 4. When Rehashed planned to marry Leila, Miriam refused but Rehashed didn’t care. Leila agreed to marry Rehashed. After the marriage Leila stayed upstairs and avoided Miriam. Miriam only spoke to her if necessary. Leila and Miriam had an argument in the kitchen one day over a missing spoon which helped them vent about how they felt.
One day Rehashed started to beat Miriam for something she did and Leila hectically stepped in and stopped him. Miriam was so honored on the fact that Leila stood up for her that she started talking to her and even gave her baby clothes. She also helped out with the baby. Leila and Miriam hated each other but grew to love each other like a mother and a daughter relationship or best friends. 5. The character describes Rehashed as the villain in the book. Hess abusive and controlling and selfish. Hess selfish because one wife isn’t enough for him and when Miriam lost her child he had no remorse for her, he only cared about himself.
Hess abusive because he nearly killed Leila for bringing Atari into their home. He is controlling because he makes the women to things around the house and tell them when to speak or when not to speak and etc. 6. The author brings out the theme friendship because although Miriam and Leila didn’t care for each other they eventually gained love for each other that they looked out for each other. They took care of each other with whatever they needed. Another theme that was brought out was heroism because when Rehashed was beating on Leila nearly killing her Miriam took action and it Rehashed with a shovel killing him.
Miriam accepted her faith and told Leila to take her children and flee with Atari. Miriam was prosecuted for her crime. 7. I think the tile ” A Thousand Splendid Suns” means the brilliance inside you. When I say that mean these women were abused, given off, lost the love of their lives, living in the center of a war, and unhappy but they still were strong and remained with hope that one day things will get better. Although the circumstances of their situation they stood up for each other and helped each other.
