Assignment Anthony Scarsdale In the first scenario Drugs at a Friend’s House there is a moral problem. As an off-duty officer watching people snorting cocaine at a friend’s party must leave the premises immediately. Before leaving the premises, I will have to inform my friend about her friend’s use of illegal drugs at her own home, dispose the illegal drugs, throw out her friends from the property, and to also inform my good friend that next time it happens, that will report it to the department, and make an arrest.
Educating my friend, whether the she knew of the activity in the first place or not, will teach her that drug use is illegal and is not looked over by me. My friend, friend will be wary next time around, and definitely will have respect for her friend, and me being an officer. But the problem with this option is that if the friend and her friend’s friends do use illegal drugs regularly, next time they throw a party, all they have to do is not invite me the cop again.
Most often time, people do not learn when given chances to peoples and that is why punishment is better given as an alternative. Therefore, the better option for the off-duty officer to do is to stay put and call the department and report the illegal activity, while at the party so that cops can invade the premises and make the arrest, although this could end a good friendship. . The off-duty cop could then be a witness. This option, though harsher, will teach the good friend a greater lesson than the first option.
This option would be a really hard decision, because you run the risk of losing a friend and your friend may not know of their friend’s illegal activity. This will be something you will have to live with. You will have to ask yourself what is more important, your career or your friendship. This would be a very hard choice for me to make, especially if my friend didn’t know about the drug use, but would also want to make the right moral decision. Oldest want to break the law so I would have to report the illegal drug use. The moral problem is that cocaine is an illegal drug, and if the cop stays at the party with the knowledge of the illegal activity and not reporting it, he is then condoning the wrongdoing; therefore, also condoning the breaking of the law. In the second scenario, the problem with accepting gifts by cops from public is putting yourself in a place in which anybody can reasonably expect or demand special attention and consideration.
Also, in allowing yourself to receive gifts, which may fall into the society-of-large hypothesis. Now, receiving innocent gifts today may result in bribes tomorrow. Even though it is not illegal, professional discretion need be applied when it comes to accepting any gifts from public. A cop must be strong and firm in turning down all gifts, small and large, because it can be interpreted n the public mind that the cop could be influenced by gifts over his judgment in the discharge of his obligations.
You can explain the store own that it nothing toward him, but it is just not a good idea as an officer to except gifts from the public and that you are just doing your job and that there is no hard feelings and that you really appreciate the nice gesture. For these reasons, the cop must refuse the gifts, and thank the business owner for the thought. In the last scenario, the problem with scenario is that Officer Davis is more concerned about the sexuality of Officer Jones then he is about the safety of his partner at work.
If Officer Davis is moved, problems arise such as nepotism and the disregard of the law such as prejudice at work, which may lead to termination. Therefore, Officer Davit’s must not be given special treatment, remind him to be professional, that his duty is to be an officer, to uphold the law while keeping his partner safe on duty, that sexuality is not a crime and should not be an issue at work for the reason that a person’s sexuality does not limit their ability to do a good job, and that he must be warned that if his behavior regarding not willing to work with nonsexual continues, that he will be fired.
