RMD 577 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY DEVELOPMENT THE IMPORTANCE OF TECHNOLOGY IN THE PRODUCTION OF 3D ANIMATION FILMS AMONG THE ANIMATORS IN MALAYSIA. DINIZAR BIN DANIAL 2010273278 AD2214B LECTURER : EN MD SABRI MOHAMAD ASSIGNMENT 3 The importance of technology in the production of 3D animation films among the animators in Malaysia. Issue – 3D animation films Problem – importance of technology in the production Sample – animators Location – Malaysia Direction – the importance INTRODUCTION Animation generally refers to the process of setting inanimate objects in motion.
It is broadly categorize into three forms namely 2D animation, 3D Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) and 3D Motion Capture. The oldest and most basic form of animation used up to the present is 2D animation. The process of 2D animation is done by combining multiple sets of two-dimensional hand-drawn objects and placing them in a sequence and in a manner that creates an illusion that the drawn objects are in fact moving. With the advancement of computer technology, 2D animation has evolved into more than just handmade drawings. 3D animation in the other hand can be further classified into 3D CGI and 3D motion capture.

These forms of animation give a more realistic view of the character because it gives the object the illusion of movement in a three-dimensional perspective. Unlike 2D animation, 3D CGI and 3D motion capture rely more on computer technology rather than the creativity of the artist in drawing an inanimate object. Animation films in Malaysia still backward compared with other country such as Japan, Korea and US. Today animation films become growing and being large animation company which produces more animation films with high technology.
In Malaysia, animation Films Company have to face with high challenge especially in producing the good animation films like Japan, Korea and US. They have so many budgets with good facilities and high technologies to produces the good animation films such as Shrek, Toy Story 3, Mega mind and others. BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM 3D animation films in Malaysia which is featured the cartoons are still backward to compared with other country such as Japan, Korea and US. As we all know, the technology is a main role in creating the good quality of 3D animation films.
Without technology, there is nothing we can do in creating a good 3D animation films. Animators in Malaysia really need the high and good technology to make their story creation become reality. If the animator had the best talent in creating the story for films but there is no technology or medium to help them, then there is nothing and just a waste. We can see here that technology have the importance role among the animators in Malaysia in creating good 3D animation films. So, this research is conducted to know what are the importance of technology in the production of 3D animation films among the animators in Malaysia.
PROBLEM STATEMENT QUESTION 1) Is the problem of current interest? We know that 3D animation films in Malaysia still backward other than country such as Korea, Japan and US. The animators need to know the importance of using high technology in their works so they can produce more high quality of animation films. 2) Is the problem likely to continue into the future? If we didn’t take any action, this problem will continue into the future. The animator need to understand and know the importance in using technology in producing their films. So that, we can compete with other country in animation sector. ) How large is the population affected by the problem? This problem affected all people in animation sector especially the animator and the producer itself. 4) How important, influential, or popular is this population? The animator plays main role in this situation whereby they are the player in this sector and they determine how the story line of their films. 5) Would this study substantially revise or extend existing knowledge? There have been a few research done before about this problem too and this study is more to extend the existing knowledge. ) Would research findings lead to some useful change in best practice? The findings of the research will change the level of quality of the 3D animation films production when the animator know about and how to use technology in their films making process. OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH The objective of this research is to find out what are the importance of technology in the production of 3D animation films among the animators in Malaysia and how it relates with the quality of animation films. The animators need to know the importance of technology so they can create more good ideas and increase the quality of their 3D animation films. RESEARCH QUESTION/HYPOTHESES
Research Questions 1) How technology in animation films production affects the cost of production? 2) It’s that true with using technology, the process in creating films more faster? 3) How efficient that films when using the technology such as CGI in the film’s production? 4) How to make 3D animation films in our country more interesting and attractive? 5) What are the relationship between technology and the safety of an actor in animation films production? Hypotheses 1) Animation films production become more cost-effective when using high technology such as CGI. ) The more high technology were used in creating the animation films, the more time will be save in animation films creating process. 3) With the technology of animation, the films more efficient and more realistic. 4) The more high technology were used, the more interesting animation film could be produced. 5) Using the high technology, no life were risked to do stunt action. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY This study is to find out what are the importance of technology in 3D animation films production among the animators in Malaysia.
It’s very important because to compete with other animation film from outside, we need to know the technology first and how to use it to produce high quality animation films. The animators need to know the importance of using high technology in their works, so they will use that technology and produce more high quality and good 3D animation films better than using manual way. SCOPE This research were conducted to know the importance of technology in the production of 3D animation films in Malaysia. So, what the researcher want to know more about is what are the technology play roles in the animation films production.
This research also want to know what are the advantages and disadvantages using high technology such as CGI in the animation production process. LIMITATION There are a few limitation in this study since this research sample is the animator itself whereby they already known is very committed with their work and doesn’t have much time for them to answer the question about this problem. This research also have limited time in getting the data because a lot of procedures need to be make first before the researcher can interviewed the animator and get their answer according to this problem.
Besides that, this research is including almost people in this animation sector especially the animator as the respondents. This is very large population and they can’t be contact easily because no data about them were provided. The cost in carrying out this research also high because the researcher need to travel and find the animator around this country to get the data about this problem. LITERATURE REVIEW Animation is a series of images designed so that each image appears an alteration of the previous one, and in which the sequence of images is determined by either the designer or the user’s( Ruiz JG, Cook DA, Levinson AJ,2009)
According to Stuart Bryson(2005), animation of articulated figures has been a popular area of research especially in the last 20 years. Animation is used in the fields of visual effects for films, interactive video games and robotics. As compared to Japan, Korea and USA, Malaysia animation films are still lagging behind them particularly in technology and facilities. Despite producing alarming number of local animation, the standard has yet to meet the international market. At present, Malaysian animations have to battle against several loopholes that stop them from being good as other countries, namely Japan and China. Subaidah,2008) In her study on budget to making an animation films, Subaidah(2008) told that to produce a 60 to 100 minute animation feature film may cost between RM1 million to RM2 million. And as for TV, a 25-minute programme will cost RM35 thousand, but the producer will only be paid between RM20 thousand to RM25 thousand for a 30-minute episode since the return is rather small compared to the cost of production, the government has provided financial assistance for producers to produce animation films and series either for the local or international markets but it’s still not sufficient.
Computer generated imagery (CGI) effects have dramatically improved the process of creating animated films. A once very time consuming and labour intensive method (e. g. traditional animation), and thanks to the advances of digital technology, such as CGI software programs, animation has recently become more efficient and cost-effective to produce. This is truly the golden age for animation; after all, animated films are more realistic in nature–even a character’s facial expressions can be made to look real. ( Rhonda Callow, 2009)
According to Rhonda Callow(2009), CGI technology now has a lead over other special effect methods. For one, CGI is not only safer, it’s also cost-friendly and allows the filmmaker to have greater control over a production. Why risk someone’s life with a mechanical effect if you can shoot it safely and quicker in a controlled environment with CGI? However, planning ahead of time before production, as is/ was with mechanical special effects, is still a major factor to consider for any special effects supervisor. At first there was no such concept.
Films are used to a boring and animation are used to the concept of 2D photo or two dimensions. As the technology has changed the concept, was created. The use of this technology makes movie watching an enjoyable experience. This makes the film even more attractive and interesting to the public. (Howdy,2010) METHODOLOGY 1. What was the design of the research? The design of this research is experimental design. 2. Who were the subjects or respondents? The animators are the respondents or subjects for this research. 3.
How were the subjects/respondents selected? Non random sampling. 4. What are the instruments used? Questionnaires and interview. 5. Were the instruments adapted from previous study or newly developed? The instruments is adapted from previous study. So, in this research, the purpose or the objectives of this research is to find out what are the importance of technology in the 3D animation films production. As all we know, 3D animation films in Malaysia still not achieved high quality of productions just like other country such as Korea, Japan and US done.
This is because the animator doesn’t use and know about high technology in the process of films making because some of them didn’t get training perfectly. The location of the data collection is in animation industry area such as Kuala Lumpur which is most of our respondents were live and work. The population that the researcher studied was the animator which is involved in animation films production. This respondents were selected by non random whereby only the animator that involved in this research study. The researcher used questionnaires and interview as the method of this research.
This method of research were adapted from previous study but have done a lot of improvements in getting the data. REFERENCES Ruiz JG, Cook DA, Levinson AJ. (2009).
