Phase 5 Individual Project CMP Plan Part 5: Conclusion and Call to Action By Belinda Ashley UNIV201-1103B-05 Career Planning and Management Professor Janelle Custard September 20, 2011 This class was really a class that I’ll walk away from feeling as if I’ve learned more about myself and my motivations for why and how I do the things I do. When I think about what our WholeBrain Assessment told me about myself, it made many of my actions make a lot of sense. With my strongest preference being in L1, I found the preferences to be right on point while disagreeing with my potential career choices.

I found myself also agreeing with the thought preferences of my second strongest thought preference, L2. However, I also found no passion with the subjects and career preferences, there, either. I found that I had a great deal of agreement in thought and preference towards my weakest thought preference. It fully expressed my way of doing things as well as pointing to the career goals I’ve had in my head for myself my entire life. I’ve found however, that my third weakest thought preference tended to be more reflective of my personality more than the way I think.

I believe there are some parts of people’s personalities and behaviors that have little to do with how they think. Their personalities simply just are or as they say, “They came by them honestly. ” I won’t let the Assessment impact or influence how I learn while at CTUO. I have classes that I must take to get my degree and I will take them and do them to the best of my ability—even if they are classes that I have no interest in. While I may think a certain way, sometimes, I simply have to “bite the bullet” and just do what I must to learn the material and sometimes to apply it as well.

I don’t feel that my results influenced my SMART goals. It may on some rudimentary level farther down the line influence how I go about acting on those goals, but I like most people, I don’t make goals based on how easy and attainable they are. I make them because they need to be done and they are something that I use as hallmarks for how well I am doing on my way to my bigger picture. My results were somewhat accurate about how I would lead. I tend to lead in two ways—directly and indirectly. When I lead directly, I’m pretty up-front about what I want and what I expect.

Some say that I am cold. When I lead in an indirect manner, I tend to lead by letting others think that what they are doing is their idea or something that they already wanted to do before I had a chance to suggest the task. As a result, I can be dispassionate in one way and manipulative in the other way. Either way, I’m known for getting things done. My short-term goals include raising my GPA and working on my languages. I want to bring my GPA closer to 4. 0 and I also want to get a deeper grasp into my languages that my future potential employees will require of me.

My long-term goals included losing weight and graduating in 2012 with the intent to get a second degree. I want to finally say I earned my degree. I also want to get healthier because many businesses or organization like top-ranked students and many corporations want to hire [perceived] healthy people rather than overweight or obese people. Skill areas that I need to improve upon are time management, planning when it comes to doing one task, and not allowing myself to become overly focused on any one task. I tend to do better when I have to multi-task.

Sometimes, having only one thing to focus on makes me lose focus or become bored. For the most part, I mostly need to stay focused on my languages, spend as much free time as possible getting ahead in my classes and taking better care of myself. My goal is to have all of this accomplished before the end of 2012. In the nearly six weeks that we’ve had this class, many things have changed about my thoughts for the future. I didn’t always know what I wanted to do or be once I got my degree. Indeed, while I still haven’t fully nailed that part down either, I’ve begun to think of why I want to eventually join some f the organizations that I began looking at during assignments for this class—The United Nations, The African Union, and the South Asian Union. I thought about being a translator or a diplomat or some sort. I was very much all over the place. However, after reading what feedback I did get since I missed two major assignments, I had to focus on what others got from my postings. In a response to the second discussion board, Rick stated that, “keeping peace in the world is truly a needed continued effort” as well as mentioning other points like going beyond ethics and security for wanting to join into these organizations.

That thought, in turn gave me a different direction in which to think about my future career and why I wanted to become a member of on of those associations. I think that humanitarianism might be my better choice. While, I know that social work isn’t for me, I’ve begun to think that I rejected that path because here in the United States, we have social conventions set in place to help the most needy of our society. In many other places in the world, there is no social /human/child services, no United Way, no advocates for various needs or causes.

I think for this reason, I want to work in a job that allows me to travel and possibly work overseas helping those who can’t help themselves. There are several obstacles that I would have to consider in achieving my career plans. The greatest obstacle that I have to worry about is currently the economy if it continues on the way it is for a great deal more time. This would make it harder for me to change occupations. I would greatly like to do because I would have to worry about getting and keeping a new job with benefits.

My second major concern would be that wherever I go in the world, that I can still get what I need to control my chronic condition, Multiple Sclerosis, so that I can help others improve their lives, raise their stations in life, or improve the lives of their families. I can’t do this if I allow Multiple Sclerosis to cripple me because I don’t have what I need. As much as I would like to forget all about this particular obstacle, it has a particularly nasty way of rearing it’s head at times and making my current everyday life very difficult. My third greatest obstacle and opportunity, simultaneously, would be time.

I feel like I don’t have enough sometimes and other times life I have too much. I’m impatient and that is making my goals seem that much farther off merely because I do not have the power to “make it happen now. ” It would be of great assistance if CTU Career Services were to do things: 1. Find ways to help students who are coming to school because they want to change occupations. 2. Work with Academics and whoever is in control of the rosters to create custom degrees for students with career aspirations that don’t necessarily fit into average classes. . Encourage at least one long-term class for online students who would need a language or some other skill in order to achieve their goal(s). I don’t really think that Career Services can do all of this now, since I am a student who has already been here sometime, however, it would be nice if when students are first interviewed about why they want to come to enroll at CTUO or when they first get enrolled that if this is a class that they will be required to take that provisions are made to accommodate students with career aspirations early on.

Five and a half weeks is too short to really get in everything that we may need. This class has a great deal to offer and not enough time. From an external view, I need to find a way to supplement paying for my languages since buying lots of software or paying for private lessons can be expensive. A set work schedule would be nice, too, in order to accommodate my classes. That probably won’t happen because despite my seniority at my job, people who don’t want to do anything better for them can and will complain and do what they can to interfere with my progression.

I’ve seen it happen too many times. Within the next month, I will be checking into more scholarships, and seeking more people from various organizations to find ways to learn and maybe mirror what they do when I’m on vacation. I can use this experience to further define what it is that I want to do with my life. Belinda Ashley 6724 Marshall Road Apt.
