Literacy Narative Reader and Writer Assignment Words: 802

A good writer is a good reader, and a good reader should, at the very least, be on his or her way of becoming a good writer. So far in my life I have been mostly functioning as a reader in literary terms. As a reader, I am mostly concerned about effectively interpreting the presented information and use it to better my circumstances. I learned to be an effective reader by acquiring a set of skills to recognize and adapt to the established format that certain writers use to present information, such as in technical manuals or regulatory publications.

However now is he time that I would have to sharpen my skills to be both an effective reader and writer. Originally I thought writing was straight forward. I would often write without regard to my intended readers, and then writing is Just simply transcribing the words from my mind onto paper. I was certain the words would mean the same to others. However the words sometimes did not carry their intended meaning and power.

I think it’s because my train of thoughts as the writer may not have been depicted effectively or even artistically enough to prepare the readers to engage the information in the same manner or context. Then I question myself, do the words on paper really even mean anything to others? Now I fully believe the relationship between the reader and the writer is of codependency and it is a relationship of mutual benefit and understanding. As a reader I view the writer as someone who is writing for my pleasure and my mind’s hunger for information.

To pick up a book and be thought how to do certain tasks or understand a complex concept is an immeasurable tool for me to be successful in today’s world. Based on my needs I am more used to the writers who are straight forward in presenting information and teaching points backed with hard specific data. When it comes to reading for pleasure, such as reading a literature book, I still lack the skills to completely immense myself into the story, to be transported to another time, place, world etc. For a few hours and live the characters as if I am one of them.

I still need to improve my understanding of the English language to be able to feel the characters’ emotions as he plot progresses and to critically challenge the twists and turns within the story. To fully connect to the writer and the characters is the ultimate reading experience I would like to achieve as a reader. As a writer my hopes are quite modest compared to my goals as a reader. I want to become a good writer and be able to convey an idea or feeling effectively maybe with more impacting techniques as I progress.

I want my writing skills to affect results that I intend to create. I think some basic skills good writer should possess are the proper usage punctuation, grammar and spelling. Also, a good writer should have a good knowledge base depending on the subject being written about. I believe in planning before doing when it comes to writing. Prior to starting of a writing assignment, I often create a flow chart of the different areas I want to explore in my writing, and fill the boxes with brain stormed ideas.

I would pick and choose among the ideas to establish a logical flow of information, then I would support the main points with researches and proper taxation. Most importantly I must keep my intended readers in mind when I write, I want to make sure my words make sense for the readers not Just for myself. For later reference or utilize it for immediate actions. Writers get to influence others to by presenting information in a way that can be unique and impacting. In the early stages of my life and my career I am more likely to focus on being an effective reader while building up my writing skills.

Once I have accumulated enough life and professional experience I am determined to become a good writer to pass on the information I learned so others can benefit from it in their the future endeavors. After this course I hope to obtain the basic skills for continued improvement toward becoming a good communicator, on paper as well as in person. I would continue to practice critical reading skills, and visualize the words in my mind from other people’s perspective. I hope to one day to be able to masterfully take command of the English language and effortlessly express my thoughts and feelings through the art of language.
