They also want to enjoy their life but they can’t do because of us. So there are many recommendations which help to overcome this gap.

Introduction: Generation gap mean lack of communication among parents and children. According to Word maven William Safire “Generation gap can be a frustrating lack of communication between young and old, or a useful stretch of time that separates cultures within a society, allowing them to develop their own character. ” From their position in the family, and with more life experience than younger family members, grandparents are uniquely poised to see that differences between generations can be positive for all those concerned.

Background: Although there have always been differences between the generations, the drastic differences that the term implies were not much in evidence until the twentieth century. Before that time, society was not very mobile. Young people typically lived near their extended families, worshiped in their childhood churches and often worked on the family farm or in a family business. With the advent of television and movies, young people were exposed to cultural influences alien to their own families and cultures.

Performers like Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and James Dean won adulation from the younger generation but were often met with derogation from the older generation. Then came the the 1960s, and civil rights and the Vietnam War exposed a more serious chasm between young and old The Generation Gap Today: The generation gap that was so in evidence during the 60s has resurfaced, but it is not the disruptive force that it was during the Vietnam era, A 2009 study suggests.

The Pew Research Center study found that 79% of Americans see major differences between younger and older adults in the way they look at the world. In 1969, a Gallup Poll found that a smaller percentage, 74%, perceived major differences. Today, however, although more Americans see generational differences, most do not see them as divisive. That is partly because of the areas of difference. The top areas of disagreement between young and old, according to the Pew Research Study, are use of technology and taste in music. Causes:

The major causes of generation gap was time, unawareness, perception, authority, attitudinal problem, inspiration from western culture, high or low economic status of parents, sharing, association, affection, single parental families etc. When the parents impose their advice and ideas on children then this will not play an active role in reducing the generation gap. But the separation, divorce, remarriage, authority, religious believes, educational choice, technological changes that cause the children to think of their parents to be old-fashioned.

Adults are out of touch with the modern youth, parents structurally and financially do not meet the needs of their children, economic inequality, weak traditional social control are also the major causes of generation gap. Structural changes in the marriage and family, parents and children spend very little time together, behavior and thinking of the parents is improper, difference in the ideologies of the parents and the children increase the generation gap among parents and children.

The major impacts of generation gap are the endless gap between two generations and destruction of family life. Parents are sometimes considered more responsible for generation gap than children and together the parents and children can play a vital role in eliminating this gap. Parents are mature; they have lot of experience and can handle the problems of children in a better way. But mostly they are much more indulging in the net of their old culture that they forget about the gap between these two generations.

Both parents and children can handle this problem in a better way by love, affection, communication, friendship, and sharing, awareness and proper time. Recommendations and conclusions : 1) If the parents and children give proper time to each other then the generation gap can be eliminated. 2) Children and parents both should increase their spirituality and faith and should change their attitudes towards adopting modern era. ) The children should show care and love to their parents’ especially in old age and the children should try to prevent their parents from going in isolation at old age. 4) The children and parents should practice positive thinking and try to learn to reframe stress producing beliefs, attitudes and values. 5) In case of remarriage, divorce or separation the parents should take their children into confidence and take these decisions with their consensus. 6) The parents should abolish their conservative thinking and prepare themselves and their children to keep pace with the modern world.
