Individual Activity: (10 Minutes) – After test, students will read National Geographic article on excavations of Romance Island Group Activity and Discussion: (30 Minutes) – Mysteries in History – The Lost Colony of Romance. Each Group is given the task to historically debate/ prove one of the provided theories of what happened to the colonists. Students will use research to argue in the form of a multi-sentence paragraph. Closure/ Reflection minutes) – Students will present essays to class. This will allow them to Justify their viewpoints and illustrate their ability to locate research to justify their theory.
Day 3: Founding the English Colonies Bell-ringer activity: (10 minutes) – Political Cartoon Analysis – Using TACOS method, students will analyze a historical political cartoon related to the class discussion that will follow. Class Discussion and Activity: (40 Minutes) – Class discussion on Colonization, Mercantilism, and the first English colonies. The discussion will take a close look at the story of Pocahontas in the Jamestown colony. Video clips of Disney’s version and Hollywood version will be shown to illustrate our perception of the Smith story. (Discussion of the Pocahontas Professional Article)
Group/ Individual Research Activity: (20 minutes) – Partners will research the founding of the 13 English colonies. They will be assigned a specific colony to research, Ana as we present Ana close ten class, ten students will complete a 1 colonies chart. Closure/ Reflection: (20 minutes) – Presentations of the 13 English Colonies Day 4: Life in the English Colonies Bell-ringer activity: (10 minutes) – API ACT Test Prep Question Group/ Individual Activity: (35-40 Minutes) – Article Reading – Life in the Colonies – Hutchinson, Quinoa, Squanto. Students needed to have read articles for homework.
Each group assigned a set article to discuss. Jigsaw reading activity. Groups will breakup – 1 person per reading will meet with others so all articles are represented. This will allow each student to describe the stories they read while others take notes about the importance of their stories. Class Discussion Activity: minutes) – What was life like in the colonies? Take a closer look at issues like gender roles, indentured servitude, slavery, religion. Bell-ringer activity: (10 minutes) – AP Key-terms Class Discussion and Activity: (40 Minutes): Discussion will be on the colonial settlements and their conflicts that occurred between the natives as well as the other settlers. This will lead us into the Colonial Wars of the sass which are a direct causes of the American Revolution discussed in Unit 2. Group/ Individual Activity: (20-30 minutes) – Primary Document Group Activity. Analyze Primary sources from the French and Indian War to help complete the story of the war.
Specifically show the disunion of the colonies, the biological warfare and tempted genocide of the natives used in the conflict, and the extreme debt that was created by this war. Closure/ Reflection: minutes) – Review for Unit Test Day 6: Formal Assessment – End of Unit 1 Test – August 31 Homework Assignments: (All assignments are due the final day of the unit. ) a. Unit Key-terms: Students must define all unit key-terms and include in BE folder as well as in the unit packet turned in on the last day of the unit. B. Outline Activity: Students will complete a unit outline in proper form or take Cornell Style notes on the chapter readings.
The outline must cover all of the major events of the chapters pacifically noting key concepts. Students will use the text and articles to help create an outline to study from. C. Timeline Activity: Students will create a US Historical Timeline covering the Topics of the unit. For Unit 1, the timeline must include The Age AT Exploration, Establishment AT colonies, Ana cover ten colonial conflicts discussed as well. D. DB Activity: Students will complete a DB for this Unit.
