Criminal Justice Trend Evaluation Christopher Revels CJA/394 November 13, 2011 University of Phoenix Criminal Justice Trend Evaluation Introduction The criminal justice system always has evolved with society in making modification in technology to detect growing trends. Barriers for growing trends could interpret change for justice in general. The basic for most changes are keeping up with society as priorities become more evident that signals review and inform on trends in justice.
Criminal justice for forever altering to protect and serve a changing society in trying to affect the outcome before results is permanent. This paper will examine barriers within criminal justice as it relates to women and minorities in certain departments. In addition, identify and evaluate future and current trends affecting criminal justice as defined value in the system from a changing society. Recent trends in criminal justice In criminal justice recent trends relating to gender and racial assessments had been an issue that ensures equal opportunities for each regarding police work.
The trends for women and minorities have evaluated in official and informal configuration of police organizations; however, obstacles related to gender and race although rare can happen (Muraskin & Roberts, 2009). Regardless of assessment made in different departments women have shown effective abilities to become patrol officers and provide some structure to a department. However, past trends have hampered processes into police work involving organizational resistance to slow down staffing and preservation of female officers.
Technical resistance consists of failure to adjust police equipment and gear sufficiently for women along with continuous issues in testing and firearms preparations that could be prevented with procedural methods. Another resistance is political and cultural resistance that focuses on issues with development of flexible shift for maternity-paternity policies and child- care giving women options during their time as patrol officers (Muraskin & Roberts, 2009). Other obstacles such prisons are both cultural and structural discriminatory toward women making working conditions uncomfortable to do their duties properly.
As women continue to prove equality in police work minorities trying to achieve status in law enforcement have other such issues in promotions and recruitment resulting in uncertainty about equal opportunities in law enforcement. Racial bias in law enforcement has been viewed as minorities deterred in areas of administrative level position in which empowered officials within the department enables African American and Hispanics officers to advance through the department.
The focus for women and minorities is eliminating obstacles to organizational structures entailing work and positional development for applying change in modern criminal justice agencies. Although, adjustments are needed for complying with employee’s requests agencies should appeal to individual with different ethnic backgrounds and preserve qualified personnel when necessary. Future trends in criminal justice Future trends affecting criminal justice is related to the employment of learning organizational tasks within a department that helps internally and externally adjusts policies for public and private sectors in criminal justice.
Necessary changes for organizational structures are needed to establish policy for important decision regarding both structural and cultural barriers that may require change with certain policies (Muraskin & Roberts. 2009). The purpose for cultural reconstruction is giving positive reinforcement for flexible models for working conditions and employee decision-making agendas that should be important factors in any future criminal justice in workplace.
Another future trend in criminal justice is connection to personal development that forces criminal justice to incorporate more flexible and dynamic structure toward information technology helping the workforce. The intent for information assists in motivating and educating employees in area of criminal justice at the same time provide structure idea in economic conditions affecting any trends in criminal justice. Information is essential for criminal justice to run efficiently and providing a high quality system gives better understand regarding the flow of cases that goes through the system (Schepenzeel, 2005).
Progression in information technology enhances structure and content of most work environment that can become dispersed at times with normal electronics technology creating links between employees and cases occupying the criminal justice. As corporate and public employment are reduced increases with virtual organizations and reengineering the workplace gives groups successful empowerment for employees, teamwork, and decision- making easier in numerous places within justice. The expectations for employment exist in paying higher wages and create development for qualified personnel regarding highly skilled jobs.
In essence traditional criminal justice will experience trouble with such skill development because law enforcement will not be able in police and correction to afford quality personnel. The workplace becomes limited to more skilled workers because displacement could be common for most workers even with highly skilled requirement. The criminal justice workforce is comprised of entry level positions in slow economic growth, which could decline creation of new jobs that could force recruitment of less qualified workers.
Furthermore in keeping perspective any potential candidates that work in criminal justice are subjected to less pay which could apply to women and minorities. One modern issue affecting criminal justice is problems with sexual harassment, which draws attention to boundaries outside law enforcement. Some cases involving sexual harassment lead courts to define the meaning of sexual harassment that were enacted by Congress establish hostile and unfriendly working environment for workers and sometimes supervisors (Muraskin & Roberts, 2009).
In addition, law makers try to reduce harassment allegations and define meaning for courts by implementing changes for empowering women to such accusations. The actions presents internalization for speaking about sexual harassment in some cases that could reduce without proof. The realization for society is contributing gender discrimination in criminal justice and gain better understanding that race and gender with prison inmates can also generate discrimination in criminal justice.
Other issue such as transgender prisoners is increasing in prisons challenging reform for placing them in prison population making this problem become inclusive of transgender prisoners. Another present issue in criminal justice is terrorism that brings serious concern for safety to citizens in America. As personnel for criminal justice cope with defending against terrorism, the current system has to consider citizens’ rights as individuals who get profiled because of the 9/11 attack also must consider ethnic and religious organizations.
The potential of terrorism concerns society as discovering new method for combating attacks to avoid civil liberties upon other ethnic groups. The purpose is respecting certain liberties protects against false imprisonment and mistaken identification against arrest. The presumed innocent in criminal justice is important to maintain some semblance of order in society making citizens feel comfortable with trained officers in criminal justice.
The objective for criminal justice is changing society to prevent, control crime, and maintain justice against terrorism. The value for any system is analyzing the quality of life that citizens in communities can resolve different issues relating to crime. Goals for arrest, prosecution, and punish for wrongdoers can be traced to controlling crime at the source giving some advantages to criminal justice in preparing more efficiently for individual who chooses to commit any offenses.
The new hope for criminal justice in recent times is prevention and using such goals to validate any harsh punishment for individual committing criminal acts. Some citizens in society cruel punishment to deter individuals from committing criminal activity and prevent any future attacks from happening that may resort to different tasks to combat terrorism. The future of terrorism will depend upon the use and accessibility of information regarding detection in discovering different options with solutions in ending terrorism.
The goal for criminal justice is creating fairness within society and makes sure citizens receive equal treatment as terrorism has plagued thoughts more about prevention; the reality is discovering different methods for establishing and eliminating obstacles to preparing citizens respecting values and liberties. Conclusion Barriers for women or minorities have affected the criminal justice system; although changes for some structure are obtainable if steps are taken to correct the issue in police work.
The challenges for minorities and women in police work are achieving promotions and even employment as qualified recipients in the workforce. Information with organizations are vital for existing and sharing data in making the workplace more efficient that presenting different outcomes for cultural and structural barrier that hamper progress in public and private sector in criminal justice. Some offenses such as sexual harassment and discrimination can overcome criminal justice setting poor examples that need more in detail in trying to resolve any misunderstanding by employers and employees.
Crime will affect criminal justice in various ways such as terrorism has committed to terrifying citizens, but as information comes available to law enforcement it helps in maintaining justice in changing society opinion about justice.
