I could honestly say I was very excited to take the Self-Directed Search Inventory, and not because I believed that it was going to magically tell me what route I should be on, but I wanted to see what type of career its says I supposedly should pursue with Just the act of answering some questions. After completing the survey, I discovered that my RAISES code was SEC. The S includes education and social service occupations, E includes managerial and sales occupations and the C includes office and clerical occupations.
The Jobs that stood out to me while looking at the list under SEC were Child Development Specialist, Residence Counselor, Special Education supervisor, Kindergarten teacher and a Recreational therapist. The reason why is because I have always seen myself working with individuals other than myself. Before choosing psychology as my major, I wanted to do something in education whether it was teaching pre-k-last grade or special education. Although I am no longer interested in that, it still showed me that I am on the correct path for coming a counselor or school psychologist and that it is the right thing to do.
When switching the code around to SEE I found the career as an education consultant, which was pretty awesome since that’s similar to what I want to do. There were several of other Job listings that were interesting to me when I moved the letters around. Before actually taking the survey we had to make a list of previous Job interests, which all included either working at a school or owning my own day care center, so when I saw my results I was intrigued to see that some of the career options I was previously interested in were included under code SEC.
I was shocked to see that my results matched up pretty well to the type of Jobs that I have previously been interested in, and relate to Jobs that I am currently interested in. While the Self-Directed search didn’t exactly give me the end result of either being a counselor, the Job careers that were given to me were all about helping and educating others and that is exactly what I want to do in the near future. This then leads to the Seekers Temperament Sorter, which we had to take online. Just like the Self-Directed Search Inventory, I was eager to see what my personality type was going to be.
After completing the survey, I learned that I am a “Guardian. ” To have a guardian personality was described to be a person who has a natural talent to manage goods and services and keeps things running smoothly within their families, school, work and other areas that are shared with others. It also said that Guardians have a very social personality but when it comes to work, they become serious because they feel responsible for a certain duty and wont feel right if that task is not employed. Guardians have a very welcoming personality and are the type of people that others can lean on for help.
Lastly, it said that guardians focus a lot on making people happy and like to build good relationships with others. I was very happy with the results of the Seekers survey because I am the type of person who loves to meet new people and make then feel as comfortable as possible. I am also very interested in how others feel and I love the response of making others happy. I am a very determined person and as much as I love having fun and being pappy, I am also serious and on top of all the tasks that are given to me.
In my opinion, the personality test was more accurate that the self-directed search because the results were more precise on the kind of person I am. At the end of the day, being there for others is something that I want to do for the rest of my life and having the opportunity to find a Job that lets me do so is something I am so grateful about. The results for both evaluations were very insightful and gave me that little boost of confidence that I needed, to reassure myself that I am definitely pursuing the right dream.
