Paper 3 Saint Leo University SSC 102 ABSTRACT This paper will provide you with information about the question that was given for this assignment. You will read about the benefits and disadvantage of Globalization. You will also read about my personal view on the matter and my comments about the writers. The Dell theory of conflict was created by Thomas Friedman. It states that two countries that are involve in a business together an being a part of the same global supply-chain are less expected to go to war, because they want their business merger to be successful.
If a disturbance would occur in that supply chain it would be crucial for both countries. The development of supply chains and the effect they have had on the policies of the Government has brought steadiness to the countries they encounter. Asia, and a great deal of the Middle East, has become more firm because of their involvement with many supply chains, and as a result more involved in achieving good business. On the whole, the price of war is higher than it used to be and countries will have to consider the effect of a war on their position in the business world.
Friedman explores both the China-Taiwan relations and India-Pakistan as examples of how the flattening of the world and supply chain have a soothing effect. This causes countries to think realistically about the true cost of war, making diplomatic solution more practical. William Duiker a former History professor and Foreign Service officer disagrees with Friedman’s theory. Duiker isn’t sold on Friedman’s theory; he talks about the trend toward Globalization saying that it may be offset by simultaneous fragmentation.
What I gathered from Duiker’s statement is that a business deal can go wrong at any time. Even though countries may be in business with each other we have to anticipate all the factors that can go wrong in a business proposal. He relates this to Globalization and the advantages and disadvantages we are facing today, with so many problematic issues Duiker believes that we are heading for a counterbalance. Globalization is the changing of the world from many economies, cultures and societies into a single one.
The word is primarily used to refer to economic globalization. However, it is also used to address political and social changes around the world. Globalization is very divisive. There are many positive and negative impacts from its range. An example of Globalization being beneficial took place in the late 20th century and early 21st century; the economies of China and India grew at an astounding ratio. The two most populated nations in the world simplified their infrastructure and took millions of people out of poverty.
They produced inexpensive goods that were exported around the world. This helped improve the lives of people in those countries. It was also debated that these economic benefits encouraged democracy and made China more approachable to human rights. Globalization is known for spreading understanding between cultures as they become more familiar with each other through trade. Globalization also has its disadvantages just like any good source. It is said that people are losing jobs, because companies have turn to outsourcing work to other countries.
This is happening because the cost of labor is low and the company receives a substantial profit. Businesses are building up units in other countries equally equipped as they have done in their own country, as a result transferring the quality to other countries. There are some experts who think that globalization; along with the positive traits is also leading to the invasion of negatives like communicable diseases and social degeneration. There is also a threat of corporations ruling the world because there is a lot of power, which is invested in them due to globalization.
For nations that are at the receiver’s end are also giving up the reins in the ends of a foreign company which might again lead to a sophisticated form of colonization. To answer the remaining part of the question given, I believe that both writers are correct. Both Friedman and Duiker make really good points to back up there theories. The way I see it is that you can’t have your good without the bad. Alongside progress are set backs which we cannot run from we can only find ways to improve them. All theories always have minor kinks to work out before coming to a finish a product.
So far from the above mention I think Globalization is well on its way to making a difference. Will this difference bring more harm than good, no one knows for sure but how will we know if we never try. My suggestion to both writers is to come together and work out the differences so the theory may be perfected.
