In Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, Wily Loan is a classic American man who is in pursuit of a dream, but this dream is what gets him caught in the tines of fate and suffers at the hands of his own self made end. An unstable mind leads to irrational thinking and on to irrational behavior in this novel. Yet although he strives for this American dream, he still cannot reach his goals, nor provide for his family. Wily Loan has a gift; he lies to his loved ones including himself, and tries for gold and fails.

Wily Loan is often overlooked as just a failure, he didn’t make much money, and in the end he took his own life. However there IS more to this man than can ever be completely discussed. This man is a great man, who in many ways flies above the rest. He has two gifts, one gift is that he is good at working with his hands, a gift that he never realizes, and another one, he IS good at selling people words and ideas, like with his sons in high school, and his wife. The problem is that he uses his way with words to lie about his inadequacy as a salesman. He man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who creates a personal interest, is the man who gets ahead. Be liked and you will never want” (Miller 21 That is the problem, he is more concerned with using his way with words to sell the idea of his dream to his sons that he forgets that it is a useful strategy to sell products to customers. Although Wily may have gifts, he does have many flaws, his flaw is that he spent his life lying to himself and loved ones. He tells his wife that he makes more money than he goes, embellishes stories to his sons, and fills them with hot air.

When Wily has made the decision to end his life, he is still lying to himself, he is still embellishing his life to make it seem better, lying takes to a new level when it is self deceit. Lies are one of Will’s greatest flaws, yet a great flaw suits a great man. Wily was a dreamer, there is no doubt about that, or his good intentions, everything about him said that, it said ambition, but his ambition was fed by false versions of the truth, or Willis truth, which was far from reality, even when he failed he could not see it. That is that led to the tragedy, his lies got unraveled, and his life fell apart.
