The scopes of work that were covered include: a) Research and feasibility studies about lubricants. b) Documentation of technical information c) Create matching application for PLISB d) Lubricants Performance and Failure Analysis e) Attended Training Session 2. 0 PROJECTS AND MAIN ACTIVITIES The author was involved in several tasks and projects however only a few significant involvements are recorded below. . 4 METAL WORKING FLUID (MWF) PROJECT : PETRONAS LOGAMOL SS 200 INTRODUCTION This metal working fluid project has been carried since one year ago, under a good collaboration between PETRONAS team which is technical engineers from PLISB, PDB and researchers from PETRONAS Research Sdn. Bhd. (PRSB) and Proton ETM Bhd. There was an agreement made between Proton ETM Bhd. and PLISB to start using PETRONAS coolant, which is PETRONAS Logamol SS 200 for used in heavy cutting application at proton production line.

This project involved PETRONAS coolant which is PETRONAS Logamol SS 200 which is a premium quality extreme pressure multi-functional semi-synthetic metalworking fluid specially designed for a wide range of cutting application. It is specifically formulated to produce a very stable micro emulsion at any dilution ration both in soft and hard waters while exhibiting excellent lubricity performance an de-foam quality. Also, it contains a unique blend of corrosion inhibitors which allow it to prevent corrosion of components and work piece in both ferrous and non-ferrous operations.

It is an effective metalworking fluid designed to suit the need of single or centralized systems for the majority of cutting operations such as tapping, thereading, sawing and turning. In any heavy cutting operation or in metal working operation, machining coolants are important as it improve the machinability, and increase productivity as coolant helo to extend tool life by cooling and lubricating the work piece. But, when performing these functions, however coolant can quickly become contaminated due to foreign material which causes the coolant to lose the effectiveness and drop in performance.

Throughout using Logamol SS200, there were some issues found. In this report, the project that the author has significantly involved was focusing on the pH drop issue at proton production line. OBJECTIVE This project aimed at finding possible root cause of product called PETRONAS Logamol SS 200 which had contributed to pH drop at proton production line and to propose immediate action to boost up and maintain pH value. METHOD STAGE 1 : Define – Understanding the problem Taking steps for better understanding about the problem, the author join monthly meeting held at Proton ETM.

Meeting was conducted by Proton ETM discussing on the current performance and arising matters regarding the PETRONAS Logamol SS 200 at their production line. Besides, the author has done self study and research on the pH in coolant and the significant of pH on coolant performance. These are the summary of meetings and studies done : a) The ideal pH for coolant to operate is usually around 8 to 10 pH b) Lower pH means higher acid level c) When acid level is high (pH below 8), it indicate the bacteria and fungi growth Throughout the whole project, the pH drop as low as 1 due to continuous ctivity of bacteria and fungi. So, it is important to monitor the pH value and keep it within its range. If the pH outside the range, it indicate beginning of bacteria and fungi activities and will affect the performance of Logamol SS 200. STAGE 2 : Measure – Develop and execute appropriate data collection method To tackle th is issue, both PLISB and Proton had developed and execute appropriate data collection method. During each visits and meetings, some samples of the coolant were gathers and critical test such as pH and concentration were conducted on-site.

Proton has small lab at ETM plant for coolant monitoring purpose. In PETRONAS site, some of the samples were taken direct from proton production line and sent to PRSB for testing. These are tge equipment use by both parties. Table 1 : Equipment used in the project Equipment| Function| pH paper| * To test acid-alkaline level in fluids * Obtain immediate result by comparing the color of the paper with a chart to indicate pH level. * pH paper is easily obtained| pH meter| * Electronic instrument used to measure pH * Quick and accurate method for measuring the acidity of Logamol. Figure 2 : Dip Slide Combi Figure 3 : Evaluation Chart of Dip Slide Combi STAGE 3 : Analyze – Find the problem root causes For analyzing purpose, both PLISB and Proton has attended a brainstorming session to find the root causes. Both parties agree to use a simple fish bone method. The author has the opportunity to join the brainstorming session and together throw out all possible causes. Figure 4 : Fish Bone During the brainstorming session, the causes have been narrow down to possibility of material, environment and machine that has contributed to pH drop.

STAGE 4 : Solution – Generate and implement solution his project continues with doing a lot of discussion with technical services engineer and researchers from PRSB. After doing research and studies, we agreed to add in Grotan ; the anti bacteria, anti rust and corrosion inhibitor. Apart from that, PETRONAS also organize a knowledge sharing on aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. These steps are being done continuously and finally PETRONAS manage to boost up the pH and maintain the pH around 8. 5 to 9. PETRONAS propose for extend monitoring and test the Logamol more frequently to ensure the result.

This project is still ongoing and the author still attends the monthly meeting at Proton to monitor the Logamol SS 200 performance. The exposure that I earned from this project enhanced my interest and passion toward lubricant industry. Besides that, during my regular visit to proton ETM, I was able to observe how equipment such as compressor, diaphragm pump and heat exchanger are used in real plant, and also observe how milling, lathe and drilling are done, thus applying the knowledge that was learnt at university before. 3. 5 PLANT ATTACHMENT

During 26 April 2010 to 30 April 2010, the author was given the opportunity to have a three days plant attachment at Melaka Lube Blending Plant (MLBP) which is located at Tangga Batu, Melaka. MLBP is manufacturing plant fully owned by PLISB. The author was reporting to Mr. Hussin b. Hassan. The author grabbed this rare chance to pay a tour around the MLBP and observe how some lubricant products sold by PLISB are manufactured. Figure 5 : Lubricant Blending Shown are the simplified lubricants blending at MLBP. Lubricant consists of base oil and additives. These two oils were mixed in a heated blender to blend final product.

The finished product in blender was then transferred to Finished Oil Storage Tank, FOST before it goes to the filling line. During the first day there, the author was given the HSE briefing and was provided with safety boot. Then, the author was shown the base oil and additive storage tank which is located outside the plant. Figure 6 : Heated Blender The entire component of lubricant are added using an integrated pipeline that is controlled by DCS system. But, there are certain additives that we add manually by pouring them through a hole at the top of the blender.

The mixture is blended until homogenous mixture is obtained until we have a finished lubricant product. Before blended lubricant being transferred to the FOST tank, a fresh sample taken from the bottom of blender being tasted and analyzed at the Quality Control Lab. The author was given the opportunity to observe and tested blended product after the blending process to find its kinematic viscosity at 40? C, density and percentage of element. These are the common test done at the MLBP Lab : Table 2 : Test Parameter Test| Equipment Used| Density at 15?

The author has acquired valuable knowledge and benefited plenty throughout the period of eight months as an intern in PLISB. It has brought to the author’s attention that the working life is much different than the life in campus where everything that was taught during school is a foundation in generating multiple ideas and understandings in problem-solving activities. Although these differences are somewhat new to author, experience gained from handling difficulties during the working days will be a lifelong advantage and will continue to be a part of the author.

Challenges that rose during the Industrial Internship were tackled efficiently with the help from the author’s supervisors as well as all stall in PLISB. Their willingness to assists the author made the success of this Industrial Internship Programme. The Industrial Internship gave such great opportunity for the author to self-improve in many ways. Being brought into Flextronics with nothing but the theoretical knowledge from school has made the author struggle at the beginning to cope with the new nature.

The author had to understand professionalism when working with different people as they tend to have different characteristics. It took a long while for the author to digest such new findings and information before having the confidence to take a step forward. Since the author was involved in projects, it gave the author to understand the working process in developing and executing it. Therefore, some of weak points in this Industrial Internship can be rectified by implementing a few approaches. A few recommendations that could resolve these issues will be explained later on. 5. 2 RECOMMENDATION RECOMMENDATION TO UTP Publish or list all OPUs with brief description of the company. For the UTP students to get the placements for their internship, they only have to apply for the Non-OPU company. For the OPU’s, all are being settled down by the Student Industrial Internship Unit, SIIU. It is recommended that SIIU will publish a book or brochure containing list of all OPUs that offers internship placement for UTP student with at least the contact number of their Human Resource department with a brief introduction and simple description of the company business and activities.

This is due to some of UTP students reject the offers from OPU because they do not have any idea on that particular company especially those new PETRONAS subsidiaries Reduce report writing For the internship program, the students are required to write reports on a weekly basis containing the activities done for that week and also a full internship report at the end of the training program. It is recommended that the weekly reports should be reduced to monthly or every two months as writing these reports is time consuming.

Half the time during the 8 months stint the students will be busy finding materials for their weekly report and unable to spend more time on learning. The weekly reports have to be submitted t the plant supervisor to be evaluated. Even the supervisors feel that it is quite a burden, as they don’t have all the time to grade a student’s report. RECOMMENDATION TO PLISB Encourage the students to do a lot of presentation This is recommended to help students to build the confidence level and make student stay focus.

Besides, more presentation will puts interns on display. Staff may need to see evidence of task done and leadership in every trainee. Encourage the students to conduct assignments on their own This is recommended to help the students to be more independent, confident and to help them build more credibility and leadership skills. This would help the students to get to learn how everybody else works and to help get to know people and making it easier for them to get assistance from people later on. 5. 0 CONCLUSION
