This is a reflective account on Moving and Handling which was undertaken during my first week at college, the purpose of Moving and Handling was to learn manual handling which involved any activity that requires the use of force exerted by a person to lift, lower, push, pull, carry or otherwise move or hold an object which is needed to work within the care industry. On the 2nd of September 2014, I attended a course on Moving and handling at the College Centre, I arrived at am and was met by other students from the HEN Social Care course, and I met with my lecturer Russell and her colleague.
We went upstairs to the room with the moving and handling equipment. We went over what moving and handling involved, it was whether it’s carrying boxes of printing paper or moving large pieces of equipment. During day one of the moving and handling course, I felt nervous to use the equipment as it was the first time using them and I wasn’t feeling confident, while working with other students also I felt more anxious, as I didn’t know the other students well and didn’t want to hurt them during practicing with different and new equipment.
During day 2 we learned you have a responsibility when you move and Andre individuals that you do so safely and correctly to ensure your own safety and that of others. During day 2 of moving and handling we learnt about The Health and Safety procedures and legislation which describes moving and handling as any transporting or supporting of a service user (including sliding, rolling and tilting) with suitable equipment and technique.
We also learnt about communication using the individual’s preferred spoken language, the use of signs, symbols, pictures and or writing, we learnt about the proper way to carry someone or pick them up while boning them from one area to the next at the end of learning about the important information for moving and handling we had two paper tests which were given to us at the start of the class, we were then asked to mark them while being given out the correct answers, I fortunately passed this part of the course and the day one and received a certification to certify me passing on the 22nd of October.
