Should direct democracy be more widely used in the K? (25 marks) I think direct democracy should be more widely used in the UK however there are also disadvantages of direct democracy and critiquing of the advantages and disadvantages. Direct democracy should be used more widely in the UK because it avoids decisions made by representatives in their own interest. This is because the people are making the decisions. This will be beneficial because people’s voices will be heard and represented as a society.
This makes it that decisions are made through societies interest. However this can e critiqued because some societies may make very stupid and unfair decisions also this ruins the purpose of having a government and other type Of politicians. Another reason is because there is disillusionment with representative parties, so the people prefer to make their own decisions. This will get rid of a lot of the disillusionment with representative parties.
Which will therefore make decisions easier and quicker to be made however we could critique it might actually make it slower because instead of dealing with parties we are dealing with the whole of society and it will also be expensive to carry out. Another reason is that it is the more legitimate answer of what the people want. It is the more legitimate answer of what the people want because the minority have a say. This is beneficial because if direct democracy was not used than in the minority would not have a say at all, only the higher class and politicians have a say.
This point can be critiqued because during elections everyone is equal and has the same amount Of political power and the same amount of say in things. Finally peoples intelligence is increasing, there are more educated people therefore they can make the ‘right decisions’. With these intelligent people and their right sections it can bring changes that will benefit the ASK. This is better than only having a few political minds assisting the country.
It will mean that people from many different areas within the UK can get the change they want. However I can critique this point because if people are becoming more intelligent than they themselves can try to become politicians instead of just being a norm in society. Overall I conclude that direct democracy should be more widely used in the UK due to some of the advantages gave, The advantages outweigh the critiques. LIKE will develop way faster and better changes to society will occur due to direct democracy.
