Our government controls the majority of funding for research regarding this topic. Many of our representatives are already convinced that man-made global warming is a fact and thus they largely fund only those who support their view. The science of dollars and sense of the issue is that you either come to the same delusion or your research grant will be canceled. This is why we see large government agencies like NASA here in the states and the English Climate Research unit (CRU) apparently skewing research data on the subject. Live that contrary to popular rhetoric global warming is not primarily man-made and our efforts to spend vast amounts of public resources is a vain effort that will result in title overall climate change, but will adversely effect the economy of the Ignited States. Believe that global warming is occurring over much of the globe at this time. However, I also am convinced it is part of the natural ecological cycle. Such cycles have occurred and been measured over the last 200 years. In one example of hysteric alarmist, people were afraid man-made pollutants were causing the earth to cool prematurely.
Many articles were written that caused a stir in the sass’s. A few may remember a Newsweek article which can be viewed at http://streetlight. Com/Newsweek_cowling’s. UDF. In the aforementioned article the author called Global Warming for emergency action to prevent ecological disaster. Now as we see the cycle shift to a warming period these same types of alarmists are calling for drastic measures to be taken that could potentially harm fragile economies still staggering from the recent economic downturn.
This is why many scientists are now opposing the idea of man-made global warming and believe that drastic measures and funding directed towards preventing global warming could be better spent in finding and developing alternative energy sources or even assisting the poor. Avery/Singer and Spencer in their books oppose the idea of man-made global warming and use logical reasoning and expert testimony to support there views. Avery goes further and declares that there is a well documented cycle of weather that reoccurs approximately every 1 ,500 years wherein the earth cools and warms up according to its own natural clock (xi).
According to Avery and Singer in their book, Unstoppable Global Warming: Every 1,500 Years, Updated and Expanded Edition, the causes of the 1,500 year cycle are not well understood although 600 of them have been identified n the last million years (xi). This permits us to be relatively confident that we have been moving into the warm phase of the cycle for the last 150 years. It also suggests that we may have one or two degrees more warming if we are to get to the typical high of the present warm phase.
Although the warm phase cycle has been typically more regular than the cold phase, it does not move steadily to a peak and then fall off, but rather moves abruptly higher at the start of the warm phase followed by highly irregular (but modestly higher) temperatures for hundreds of years. Avery and Spencer are emphatic when hey state, “the earth continually warms and cools. The cycle is undeniable, ancient, often abrupt, and global. It is unstoppable (3). ” Human activity during our industrial revolution had little affect on Global Warming this cycle of warming and cooling.
The US put tons of pollutants into the air during this period so you would think that if man-made pollutants were the cause of climate change we would have seen its direct affect during this period in our history (105). The proponents of man-made global warming disagree. Nobel Laureate winner AY Gore in his book, An Inconvenient Truth, Man-made Global Warming, states that it is not only readily apparent from scientific research on the issue, but it is a scientific fact that man-made global warming is a grave danger to mankind (26-27).
He goes further to state that if we do not take steps now to reverse our carbon footprint then the earths ecosystem will suffer irreparable damage. Gore makes extensive use of visual arguments in his book by showing pictures of melting icecaps and arid desert scenes. In one of his most famous examples he illustrates the ‘fabled snows and glaciers of Mount Kilimanjaro” (42). In a photo from 1970 Gore shows us a stricture of Kilimanjaro With a frosty mount of snow at its summit. Through several following frames he illustrates the shrinking snow cap from 1970 to 2005, where we see very little of the snow cap left on the summit (43-45).
He also uses testimony from expert witnesses such as Roger Reveille, Lonnie Thompson and Michael Mann. Man’s correlated data to shows a famous “Hockey Stick” illustration that seems to show the Earth to be warming at an accelerated rate in the last 200 years since the start of the industrial revolution (61-67). Gores illustrations is startling but inaccurate state Singer and Avery. In the specific case of Mount Kilimanjaro they state that there are many reasons the snowman could have been reduced besides man-made global warming.
They point of that cultivation around the mountain and sustained drought conditions have resulted in Global Warming reduced snowfall even through he relatively cool periods from 1953-1976 (74-76). Concerning the Mann study, they believe the report outcomes were skewed due to political pressure because their results contradicted hundreds of historical scientific sources including those specifically written about the cyclic patterns of the Medieval Warming period ND the Little Ice Age (129).
After studying both sides of the issue believe the preponderance of evidence clearly shows that global climate patterns seem are little affected by human influences and that is why the primary source data is being kept from both public and scientific peer review. According to a Washington Times editorial entitled Hiding Evidence of Global Cooling, Junk Science Exposed Among Acclimatizing Believers, posted on November 24, 2009, scientific progress in recording and acting upon alarming climate-change trends depends on accurate, complete, and reproducible data.
That is why the recent revelation that global warming proponents at the Climate Research unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (ALGAE) in England is very troubling. They have been caught manipulating climate data to hide global cooling trends. Hiding primary source data or destroying it altogether puts at risk legitimate climate research. The fact is that the primary source data clearly shows that while we are currently undergoing a warming trend in our global climate it is not due to man-made pollutants.
Bothersome, the present trend is due to change and we need to be prepared with alternative energy solutions when the Earth starts to cool again. According to Spencer in Climate Confusion: How Global Warming Hysteria Leads to Bad Science, Pandering Politicians and Misguided Policies that Hurt the Poor, argues that the Earth is tremendously resilient and that because of mans ingenuity and freedom we can act to minimize or resolve environmental problems before they reach a Global Warming crisis stage (2). For instance, we can now predict how weather patterns affect environmental ecosystems and take affirmative action to prevent disaster.
An example is planting heat resilient grasses along he perimeter of desert regions to prevent its expansion into habitable regions. Instead fighting against the inevitable wind of climate change we should gather our resources and work on finding real solutions to world health issues like malaria and hunger, in addition to finding alternative energy sources that can bring electricity to all parts of the globe both cheaply and efficiently. The benefits would be more efficient heating and cooling of homes and better health overall as electricity, refrigeration, and better health care are made accessible to all people.
What can we do in this battle of fact against fiction? How can we influence the path of our current administrations strategy of taxing the fossil fuel industry and big business here in the United States, as these costs will eventually trickle down to higher costs for all Americans? We need to educate ourselves on climate change and teach our children to be responsible stewards of our environment while keeping in mind that we need to adapt to Mother Nature as she is little affected by our escapades here on Earth. Should we burn down our forests and return to the using inefficient automobiles?
