Assignment Gender and Family Gender and family have a huge affect on the actions of our juveniles. Juveniles delinquency is based on gender, because depending on the gender of the juvenile depends on what type of values where instilled within the juveniles. Also, the family has a huge affect on the action of the juveniles, because that all depends on the values of the family. The two intertwine and in this paper I will show you how the each affects the delinquency of the juveniles.
Gender affects delinquency in different ways through socialization, cognitive, and personality differences. The way both males and females are socialized affects their development, according to our text. Males usually learn to value independence, whereas females are taught about self-worth, which depends on their ability to sustain a relationship. Females unlike males usually run the risk of losing themselves in a relationship, because they feel that is their main purpose is to sustain a relationship.
Also females are more likely to be targets of sexual and physical abuse, due to the values that have been instilled within them. The cognitive differences between males and females begin in their childhood. Typically males excel much faster in assess the ability to manipulate visual images in the working memory, and females usually excel in areas that require retrieval from long-term memory and the acquisitions and use of verb information. For instance girls tend to begin speak and have a better vocabulary than boys, because parents usually talk more to their daughter than they do their sons.
Also girls are less likely to have problems with reading, but boys will less likely have problem with standardized math test. Boys within the United States also are more likely than girls to be dyslexic. However even with the scientific barriers girls have they can still be taught to increase their visual spatial. The cognitive differences can be altered by the cultural expectations and even the personality of the individual juvenile. Although girls are viewed as being more talkative than boys, scientific study has shown that males are actually more talkative than females.
Scientific study also shows that females are concerned with finding the “meaning to life”, versus competing for material things, like males. Males are very competitive and are more like to introduce new topics and to interrupt a conversation. Gender differences impact females in a different way, for instances females are more likely to develop self-esteem and self-concept issues. Many females develop these issues because of the way they may view themselves or their bodies. This is one reason why eating disorders have gone up in recent years.
These are just some of the basis to why some of the juvenile delinquency occurs. Recent studies show that female juvenile delinquency occurs due to a history of minor congenital defects, low development scores by the age of two, a need for mental services by age 10, and early onset of puberty. Males’ juvenile delinquency occurs due to disordered care-taking, lack of educational stimulation in the home, reading problems, a need for remedial education by the age of ten, late maturation, and an unemployed criminal or absent father.
These are the main reason why juvenile delinquency is present in our society today. The female juveniles that are within the juvenile system have a higher risk of being mistreated and becoming victims. The justice system judges female offenders much more harshly than they do male offenders. The females are treated much differently than the males in the justice system, and it is not fair that they are treated in this manner. What is occurring in our justice system is stereotyped beliefs about young girls.
Instead of showing concern to what brought them to the attention of the justice system; the justice system is paying more attention to controlling their behaviors, and by doing this they are mistreating the female juvenile offenders. Some would think that it would be a benefit to being a female juvenile offender, but in actuality it is worse to be a female in the juvenile justice system. Just think you are complete mistreated and you are judge more harshly by the justice system, because you are a female offender. * Family has a huge affect on delinquency with juveniles.
Juveniles tend to * Become delinquents when these four categories play a part in their lives: family breakup, family neglect, family conflict, and family deviance. You must remember that the family is primary unit for children to learn values and attitudes that guide them through life. Family breakup is one of the hardest things for juveniles to deal with, because of the absence of one parent is sometime too much for the child to cope with. Now family conflict that resides in homes is no better than a broken home. Studies show that juveniles that grow up in a violent family tend to lean toward delinquency as well.
Family neglect is very harmful to juveniles. Parents must be involved in their children’s lives. We must remember that children imitate what they see, so if the parent is displaying delinquent and deviant behavior so will the child. As you can see all of these categories directly affect juveniles and their behaviors. * Gender and family as you can see has an overwhelming affect on our juvenile delinquency. Juveniles are affected by the values which we, as adults, instill within them. We as adults must remember that most of the delinquency that occurs is a direct reflection of what we as adults instill within our juveniles. * *
