Assignment 1 Discuss characterization in a short story given. A Rose for Emily By William Faulkner Characterization refers to the techniques a writer uses to develop characters in the story. In the story ‘A Rose for Emily’, William Faulkner uses characterization to reveal the character to Miss Emily crullers, the mall role. Faulkner use to language foreshadows and builds up to the climax of the story.
He expresses the content of her character through physical descriptions, through her act, words, and feeling, through the narrator’s direct comments about the character’s nature, and through the actions, rods and feelings of the other characters. Faulkner also uses the characterization to examine the theme of the story His choice of words is descriptive, tying resoundingly into the theme through which Miss Emily Grievers threads herself emblematic to the effects of time and the nature of the old and new.
Appropriately, Faulkner starts the story with the death of Miss Emily Grievers (funeral), and he flashes back to the near distant past and leads on to demise of a woman and the traditions of the past she personifies. The characters in this story make the plot exciting to be read and it all come alive. Without the characters role ‘A Rose for Emily’ would be nothing more then a history of a small town in the South, a place called Jefferson. The combination of all the characters Is well connected and it makes the story interesting.
Characterization In ‘A Rose for Emily’ Faulkner begins and ends with the death of Miss Emily Grievers, the main character of the story. In the opening, Faulkner builds up his story with the funeral of Miss Emily. It is the evident on how the resident of Jefferson respected her because the “whole town went to her funeral: the men through a short respectful affection for fallen monument, the women mostly our mostly curiously to see Inside her house. Faulkner however, describes Miss Emily as the anguish of a southern lady who lives a strange unhappy Life. Miss Emily represented a time in history for Jefferson where woman’s appearance was perceived as a direct reflection of her husband and father. To the outside world, it might have appeared the she grew up in the lap of luxury. Though, it was Justas lonely existence, for her father ruled Miss Email’s life with an iron fist.
Her elite is surrounding by her overprotective and overbearing father who enemies her a normal life In relationship, and because of her father Is the only one man with whom she has had d relationship, she denies his death and keep his corpse three days after his death saying that he is still alive. Her father; Mr.. Grievers had left her after he robes away many of life necessities. She missed out on having friends, being a normal woman, and her ability to be happy.

After the death of her father, Miss Emily meet Homer Baron whom she thought will love her in return. Homer, a Yankee day labor comes to Jefferson with the construction company. Not long after the townspeople see them driving in a flashy yellow wheeled buggy; and when Miss Emily bought him expensive personal articles ” a silver toilet set, a nightshirt; the townspeople assume as they are lover and will not long get marry.
For a while, Miss Emily obtains the townspeople respectful attention. After all she never really intended Homer to supplant her father in the eyes of the town he couldn’t have, Homer was simply of a consort, filing a vacancy at Emily side. But it all change when Miss Emily learned Homer was a gay; he realized his presence would cause her to be pitied and laughed at. “Homer had remarked ” he liked men, and it was known that he drank with the younger men in the Elks Club ” that he was not a marrying man”.
The next sequence in the story is when Faulkner again returns to Miss Emily austere character when she purchases arsenic. When the druggist ask what the arsenic for as it required of him to ask by the law, Miss Emily uses her power and her high status to not giving any answer; “Just stared at him eye for eye, until he looked away and went and get the arsenic and wrapped it. ” Just again Faulkner deftly employs Miss Emily haughtiness to keep important details from the readers, so too does he use her elusive habits to suggest a mysterious element that help heighten the suspense.
Despite all the rumors talk by the towns people, Miss Emily had her own plan, but as Faulkner wanted to let the readers contradict what is the use of the arsenic he didn’t stated why and how does Homer disappeared. But as a clue, Faulkner come out with the smell, however, continues to persist, rapping on the reader’s curiosity. Miss Emily emerges as a figure frozen in a short of stasis, though throughout it all, Faulkner ever makes her character any less complex and ambiguous. Mr.. Grievers was another important character in the story.
It was he controlled Miss Emily mind. He had such an influence on her. Perhaps Faulkner have made him this way to show the love he and Miss Emily had for each other. He tried to influence her to what he thought was the best for her in return, she listened and obey because of the love she had for her father. In describing the death of Mr.. Grievers, Faulkner again foreshadows or alludes to the tragic ending; “She told them that her father was not dead,” and “did that for three days, until she finally broke down and allowed him to be buried properly’.
After Mr.. Grievers died, this is when the town had hope Miss Emily would get out and find a man to marry. Homer Barron was a very unique character. He was a – Yankee Northerner coming to Jefferson as a day laborer. Homer was the most important integral part to the plot because without his character the story wouldn’t have been so interesting. He was somewhat the twist to the story. Miss Emily finally finds love and Faulkner foreshadowing death for him. This really makes the story exciting and catches the reader’s attention.
Homer described as more of a poor man who is not in Miss Emily social class. When they had a relationship, the townspeople seem pleased and shocked. “Of course a Grievers would not think seriously of a Northerner, a day laborer,” at that. It seems as though Miss Emily has found a man she wants to be with forever. But Homer is not the marrying type; he is more of a man’s man. The Negro manservant was not a real important character in the story.
But without him, the plot would have lacked out a certain layer of richness. Faulkner doesn’t speak much of the manservant even though he was there with Miss Emily all the time. The cause he was leaving after her death add a little more mystery to the story and keep the readers on it toes for the conclusion of the story. The townspeople were also characters in the story, among them we probably might find the narrator of the whole story. They brought the story a life. It gave it realness and helped the readers react with the town.
