Introduction The word torture is a term that has international and national publicity. It is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as a : anguish of body or mind : agony b : something that causes agony or pain 2: the infliction of intense pain (as from burning, crushing, or wounding) to punish, coerce, or afford sadistic pleasure and According to “Uslegal” (2001-2012), the legal definiftion is “punishment inflicted in the form of physical or psychological pain inflicted on supposed criminals as a means of intimidation, deterent or punishment, or to induce them to confess their crimes, and to reveal their associates. (para. 1). We have been conditioned to believe that the act is unethical and unconstitutional but, when combined with terrorist it should be considered as acceptable. However, when it is used on terrorist or non United States citizens it doesn’t apply. It is widely discussed whether or not torture as a punishment coincides with cruel and unusual punishment clause of the Eighth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Torture and The Enemy Does torturing the enemy soldier or other targeted violators of high- value deem torture to be okay morally?
This question is an internal discussion that is seen as fit and unfit depending on whom is asked. Reportedly Abu Zubaydah, was a victim of torture and he was subjected to was being strapped to a board, with his face partially covered, while water was poured onto his nose and mouth. (Anderson,2009) The act was similar to a drowning and it happen approximately 82 times. This act was also said to be part of a training process of US military programme SERE- Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape. This was morally unethical by U. S. and international law.
Abu Zubaydah was titled as high valued detainee due his affiliation with Al-Qaeda and 9-11. Other then the waste board technique he was also some other interrogation techniques also known as torture were : forced nudity, sleep deprivation, confinement in small dark boxes, deprivation of solid food, cold temperatures, stress positions, and physical assaults. While at times he contested to his affiliation he was linked to Bin Laden years earlier. According to ” Abu Zubaydah ” (n. d. ), ” By 1999, the U. S. Government was attempting to run surveillance on Abu
Zubaydah. By March 2000, United States officials were reporting that Abu Zubaydah was a “senior bin Laden official”, the “former head of Egypt-based Islamic Jihad”, a “trusted aide” to bin Laden with “growing power,” who had “played a key role in the East Africa embassy attacks. ” (n. d. ). August of 2001 confessions were made by other detainees stated that Abu Zubaydah had a role in other United States planned attacks. . Conclusion Torture is an act that should not be freely administered unless it upon a person of guilt.
To punish someone of no guilt does not coincide with the belief of the American way. To punish someone based on proof is wrong. The United States known to be a bully, but, it also puts me in the mind of my mom. I remember always saying, “Don’t do as I do but, as I tell you to do” this is kind of what the U. S is doing to the other countries. Because the U. S will get involve with civil affairs and punish them if they are wrong. My question is who is managing the manager? I don’t think that will ever be answered.
