“The Most Dangerous Game” Richard Connell uses conflict to create suspense and a evident sense of danger. One type of conflict Connell uses is man vs.. Nature. Connell shows this by having a Rainstorm vs.. Sea conflict where Rainstorm ‘for a seemingly endless time… Fought the Readers know that Rainstorm is ether going to drown at sea or be washed ashore on the seemingly evil island that Connell introduced at the beginning of the book. Man. This conflict of Rainstorm vs.. Croft is brought to the readers attention at the beginning of the book, but since it is the main conflict, it is a continuous conflict throughout the story. Croft forces Rainstorm to fight against him in Croft refers to as Raindrop’s “brain… Strength and stamina against” (18) his own. General Croft is intent on killing Rainstorm, as he has done to countless other men, and Rainstorm knows he is at a disadvantage. Connell also uses Man vs.. Self conflict.

During the story Rainstorm repeatedly rises to ignores his fears of being murdered by General Croft, but as the story progresses it get harder and harder for him to put his fears to the side. Rainstorm starts the realize how skilled of. Hunter Croft is and begins to accept the fact that Croft may be a better hunter than he is. Rainstorm repeats the phrase “l must keep my nerve” and when Connell is describing the first time Rainstorm knew the full meaning of terror” (20) we start to see Rainstorm failing in his abilities of keeping calm. Rainstorm terror is crippling his abilities to to think clearly.
