Communication is a critical function in today’s business society. For me it is very important that I be able to speak and communicate clearly and effectively to my colleagues and leadership team. In order to see our process through, I must communicate and give clear direction and be concise in that direction. Some of my strengths in verbal communication are giving detailed instructions, speaking clearly and loudly, and being prepared to speak with data and facts.
I like to give a clear road map on what I’m asking my team to do. I want to make sure that I don’t leave anyone in the dark or that they don’t miscomprehend the task that I have just assigned to them. It is important that when I assign a task I use the proper tone and vocabulary, so they don’t misunderstand and I won’t have to repeat myself several times. It is vital in my position that I speak and communicate in a professional manner, being professional in the wording and tone I use when speaking to my colleagues.
Another of my strengths is speaking with data and facts. I have found it much more relaxing if you are knowledgeable about the topic of discussion. I feel when I research the topic and apply my critical thinking abilities I have a stronger standing communicating back to our team. It increases my self-confidence so I don’t pause between words and I can give a better presentation on the issue. My weakness in verbal communication is listening and using good vocabulary. I don’t always listen to the other side.
I can communicate my given direction; however I don’t always listen to ensure that my direction is the correct path. I have noticed that when I’m hosting a meeting that none of my colleagues will ask questions, which concerns me due to my experience in not being able to listen and then communicate effectively. I have to ask the team for their input and opinions on the subject so I can understand their position better. For my vocabulary, I don’t always use the correct wording and that could mislead the team.
I really have to pay attention to what I say when I say it. Sometimes, my vocabulary makes me look unprofessional and I lose credibility among my team members. My strengths in nonverbal communications are showing the proper emotions to the issue and mixing a positive attitude at times when the stress level has risen. My colleagues can usually look at my body language and tell how my day is going. When things are going in a negative manner I always try to put a positive spin on things by adjusting my face or body expressions.
When I communicate I like to show body movements so they can have a clearer comprehension on what I’m communicating to them. I show more nonverbal communication abilities at my personal level then professional. My weaknesses in that area are; when I’m really stressed I show no emotions and I don’t present a good nonverbal communication side at a professional level. The majority of the time I show no emotions at all at work. It has been brought to my attention that I need to work on my personal relationships. I’m given a negative appearance among my colleagues.
It is even hard for me to communicate effectively and listen and have a smooth conversation exchange among my team members and colleagues. For those two areas, verbal and nonverbal communications, the things that I would like to improve and excel on are my listening abilities, speaking and using proper vocabulary without stuttering, and presenting a professional nonverbal communication side. Everyone possesses the general fundamental skills in verbal and nonverbal communication. I have several strengths in both areas that have assisted me in developing my career.
After reading some of the class summaries and course material, my expectations are advancing to the next level on the weaknesses that I have listed in this paper. I do agree that communication is involved with human relationships and that I need to advance my skills in order to further my career, however, the most important aspect is to understand these relationships so I can better communicate those issues. I need to learn to intermix my personal and professional side so that I have a more positive outlook in the work place.
